The Book Girl

Review: Romeo, Romeo by Robin Kaye (New Author Challenge)

romeo-romeoFrom the back of the book:

Rosalie Ronaldi doesn’t have a domestic bone in her body….

All she cares about is her career, so she survives on take-out and dirty martinis, keeps her shoes under the dining room table, her bras on the shower curtain rod, and her clothes on the couch…

Nick Romeo is every woman’s fantasy – tall, dark, handsome, rich, really good in bed, AND he loves to cook and clean…

He says he wants an independent woman, but when he meets Rosalie, all he wants to do is take care of her. Before too long, he’s cleaned up her apartment, stocked her refrigerator, and adopted her dog…

So what’s the problem? Just a little matter mistaken identity, corporate theft, a hidden past in juvenile detention and one big nosy Italian family too close for comfort…

I am an extremely happily married woman, but I might divorce my husband for someone like Nick Romeo. (Of course, I’m kidding. So, honey when you read this remember it was a joke, lol) Nick is every woman’s fantasy…every woman but Rosalie Ronaldi. She doesn’t want to get involved with anyone at all. But Nick manages to worm his way into her life and her heart. This was a great love story. I became way invested in the characters and what was happening with them. I love Rosalie’s crazy family and Gina, her best friend and assistant. The only thing that I didn’t like was the way that they two main characters kept secrets from each other. The secrets weren’t really anything big and would probably not have hurt the relationship as much as being dishonest would. I can’t wait to read the next book by Robin Kaye, Too Hot to Handle (May 2009).

Review: Nutcase by Charlotte Hughes

nutcaseOn the back of the book:

The life of a psychologist is enough to drive anyone nuts…

Ever since she blew up her own office with nitroglycerin (she was sure the patient was bluffing – until the vial exploded), psychologist Kate Holly has been one step away from going off her rocker. It doesn’t help that she’s still in love with her firefighter ex-husband – a man whose only flow is that he seeks out burning buildings and runs inside them. They both want to patch things up, but Kate has been using sex to avoid talking, and he wants to know: Is there something she’s not telling him?

Well, yes, there is. Kate is about to get evicted from her office, and her best option may be to share space with her hot tub-loving ex-boyfriend, Dr. Thad Glazer. With her oddball patients, her meddling mother, and her eccentric secretary thrown into the mix – not to mention a spate of suspicious fires – will Kate put her life back together before she winds up in a padded cell?

I love Kate Holly. Her life is so disfunctional and entertaining. This is book #2 in this series and I already can’t wait for book #3. Nutcase takes place about 2 months after What Crazy Looks Like. Kate is still trying to rebuild her marriage, even though the initial reason for the divorce still exist. This book has so many hilarious characters it is hard to name a favorite. All of the people in Kate’s life challenge her daily to remain sane. The fires being set endanger Jay, Kate’s ex-husband, and lead to Kate having to face some of her issues with Jay’s job.

Look for Nutcase on February 24th or pre-order at one of these stores.

Review:The Black Sheep and the Princess by Donna Kauffman (new author challenge)

black-sheepFrom the back of the book:

They’re the black sheep—the bad boys every good girl wants to have hold her, touch her, take her, love her. But being bad never felt so good.

“I have some spare beer, if you’re interested.”
I’d know that voice anywhere, and every time I hear it, it makes me sweat. Not that well—bred heiresses are supposed to sweat, but if you saw Donovan MacLeod, trust me, you’d need a change of clothes, too. It’s been eighteen years, but he’s got the same cocky swagger, silver—gray eyes, shaggy hair, and that sexy smile that promises a whole lot of trouble. Not that I’ll ever find out because he loathes me—thinks I’m some spoiled princess. So, there’s something I’ve just got to ask.

“Why are you here, Donovan?”
The lady asked a question, she deserves an answer. Well, Kate Sutherland, how about, I’ve fantasized about you for eighteen years? Or, I wanted to remember how it feels to need a cold shower every time you flick that perfect blond hair out of your blue eyes? Or, Why don’t you come over here and let me show you, baby? Yeah, good answers, but I’ll stick with the first one—I came back to help, because I think you’re in for some trouble. My bad—boy gut says you’re gonna need me—in more ways than one.

This book was just okay. I’m not sure exactly sure what exactly it was that I didn’t like, but there was something. I think that I just didn’t care about the characters. There wasn’t enough buildup and explanation about the past relationship between the two main characters and the reason they didn’t want to be around each other. The other thing that I didn’t care for was the “mystery” part of the story was weak and I didn’t feel like it was very relevant except for bringing the two characters together. There are two more books in this series, but I probably wont read them.

Review: At Grave’s End by Jeaniene Frost

at-graves-endFrom the back of the book:

Some things won’t stay buried . . . at grave’s end

As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’s past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.

It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s life. With her undead lover Bones at her side, she’s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat’s worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover’s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.

What can I say about this book? I LOVED it!! Everyone should read this series. Cat and Bones are a great couple and the romance in the book is very strong. They also kick butt. This book took me on a roller coaster ride. At times I wasn’t sure that things were going to turn out the way I wanted them to. All of the characters in this book are so well written and they mesh together well, even the ones I don’t like. I can’t wait for the next Night Huntress Book (which comes out in July)

Review: Talk of the Town by Karen Hawkins (New Author Challenge)

talk-of-the-townFrom the back of the book:

Do Blondes Have More Fun?

Newly divorced Roxie Treymayne is dying to find out. After years of being the perfect Southern lady, all she ended up with was a cheating husband. So she goes bombshell blond, gets a provocatively placed tattoo, and prepares to live it up as a Bad Girl. But then her mother falls ill…and Roxie is forced to return to Glory, North Carolina.

He’d Love to Know.

Once the town bad boy, Nick Sheppard is now Glory’s highly respected sheriff. When the hot blonde he stops for speeding turns out to be formerly prim Homecoming Queen Roxanne Treymayne, Nick doesn’t quite know where to look – though he’d like a much closer one at the tattoo peeking from her shorts.

But It Takes Two to Tango

Roxie and Nick had a steamy fling in high school, but a love affair between a Southern princess and a boy from the wrong side of the tracks was doomed from the wrong side of the tracks was doomed from the start. Now they have a second chance. Can they get it right? Or will they just end up…the talk of the town?

I have never read any of Karen Hawkins historical romances, but have heard good things. Since I am on a contemporary romance kick I decided to try her new book, Talk of the Town. I loved it. The book is sexy and funny. I love how nothing is very serious in the book, just a fun, light read. Roxie seems to have reverted to a bad teenager, avoiding her mother and trying to get with a guy she doesn’t think is any good for her.  Nick has shed his bad boy past and is now the law in Glory. The role reversal between these two makes their relationship very interesting. I can’t wait to read more by Karen Hawkins!
