Review: The Viscount In Her Bedroom by Gayle Callen (New Author Challenge)

viscountFrom the book:

When all hope seems lost…

Louisa Shelby’s carefree life of elegant balls and beautiful frocks ended when her father died, leaving her penniless. With no hope of securing a proper marriage, the vivacious young miss accepts a position as a companion to an elderly viscountess. But temptation in a most unexpected guise awaits Louisa in the dowager’s home…

Once, Simon Wade was London’s most eligible accident forced him into seclusion, away from prying eyes and questions. He thought he’d never again experience the tender touch of a beautiful woman. But while he yearns to hold the enchanting Lousia and taste the intoxicating nectar of her kiss, he will accept no woman’s pity.

Louisa never desired a man the way she burns for Simon. And now her chance at happiness may rest in her ability to convince the stubborn viscount that her passion is real…and her love is true.

I have been looking for some good historical romance  books. THE VISCOUNT IN HER BEDROOM is a great historical. Louisa is a fixer. She wants to fix those around her and make them happy. Simon is a man in need of fixing, or so she thinks. These two had great chemistry and an affection that was based on a need to be important to someone for who they were on the inside. I felt a connection between the two characters was very strong.  The injury that Simon suffers is something that I had never read about before. I found the writing of his condition very believable. I can’t wait to read more by this author!

Review: Big Guns out of Uniform Anthology

big1From the back of the book:

They are intriguing strangers we pass on the street – men who do whatever it takes to keep us safe from the evils of the world. Mysterious and untamable, they hold honor, strength, and courage close to their well-guarded hearts. But no matter how much their jobs require them to lay aside their personal lives, they can’t deny that when their facades and clothers are stripped off, they have burning needs like any other man…

In SHERRILYN KENYON’s “BAD to the Bone, ” teacher Marianne Webernec wins the “Hideaway Heroine Sweepstakes” and a chance to pretend to be the heroine in her favorite romance novel. Whisked away to a remote tropical island, Marianne’s fantasies become real when BAD (Bureau of American Defense) agent Kyle Foster kidnaps her. Together they uncover Marianne’s every desire, and Kyle’s secret fantasy, too.

In LIZ CARLYLE’s “Let’s Talk About Sex,” Dr. Delia Sydney dishes out perfectly sound sex advice on the radio. So how is it that this slightly repressed divorcee is so easily seduced by her bad-boy neighbor? And just what is it about Nick Woodruff, a smooth-talking sergeant on a forced “vacation,” that makes Delia feel she’ll do anything – anything – when she’s with him?

Things get even hotter in NICOLE CAMDEN’s “The Nekkid Truth” when crime scene photographer Debbie Valley works more closely than every with the dective who has fascinated her for years. After a harrowing accident Devvie finds her life forever changed when she loses the ability to recognize faces. She is forced to identify people by their bodies and soon finds that the wonders of Detective Marshall Scott’s body never cease…and that he needs her unique gift to help catch a killer.

This is a great anthology. All three stories are sexy and fun. I really enjoyed Nicole Camden’s “The Nekkid Truth”, the idea that Debbie cannot remember faces, even her own, sets up some interesting moments between her and Marshall. All three of these authors were knew to me. I’m looking forward to reading more by each of them.

For those of you that have read something by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Liz Carlyle, or Nicole Camden, what is your favorite book by that author?

A Recipe for Samhain

By Linda Wisdom

If Wicked By Any Other Name and its characters were a recipe or even foods on the table, what would you find there?

Hm, let’s think witchy Stasi. Sweet, rich in flavor. Let’s think buttercream frosting with a hint of cinnamon since there are the red hearts dancing over her head and her sweet nature is getting a bit tart what with all that’s going on in her life. And she’d go very well with spice cake because as her power grows in the book, the flavor she would be would grow as well.

And Trev, sexy wizard would have to be sinful chocolate, wouldn’t he? Something you just can’t get enough of. Let’s say a rich triple layer fudge cake. Considering Stasi is addicted to a local resort’s famous chocolate soufflé it seems right that Trev would come under the chocolate heading.

While Horace, Stasi’s trouble making gargoyle would be something that you have to return to whether you want to or not. Let’s say potato chips.

Moonstone Lake is harmed by olde magick Stasi and fellow witch can’t cure, so something acidic and foul tasting there. Vinegar comes to mind.

And a human because of a hexed sachet is suing poor Stasi. Something else that tastes bad. I’m really seeing cod liver oil here.9781402217739-2

And with magick affecting the town along with a lunar eclipse on Samhain, Mercury Retrograde and hysteria in town due to a heavy snowstorm that’s cut the town off from the rest of the world and a power outage, we’re going to have to consider not only bad taste, but also what would truly upset the stomach. Old-fashioned castor oil would work for that.

But Stasi isn’t backing down. She loves her town and wants it set to rights again and she’ll do whatever it takes. Thanks to friend witches Blair and Jazz she’s able to do that and they’ll just add more richness to the recipe that makes up Stasi.

And Nick is there along with sexy town handyman Jake. Not the rich fudge cake like Trev, but let’s see Nick as a different feast of flavors tart and sweet and Jake as something wholesome like bread warm from the oven. I have to say when I use my breadmaker it’s really hard to stop myself with one slice of warm bread with butter when it’s finished!

Yes, it’s not a healthy recipe nor is it all that appetizing, but if take out the bad and keep the good, then you can sit there and nibble on this and that.

Do you ever see a book as a recipe or even various foods?

Linda

Review: Wicked by Any Other Name by Linda Wisdom

wicked

From the back of the book:

Sparks fly when a love charm goes awry and talented witch Stasi Romanov finds herself in a preternatural lawsuit matching wits with devastatingly handsome wizard attorney Trevor Barnes. Then mysterious magic from an unknown enemy threatens to turn the town into a modern day Salem, and Stasi’s witchy friends gather for the fight. They need Trevor’s powerful help. but every witch knows you can’t trust a wizard, and soon Stasi is fighting for her life and her heart.

When I started reading this book, I was a little thrown off by the change in main characters. I had expected this book to be about Jazz still, but was pleasantly surprised to be reading about Stasi and Blair. These two character’s complement each other completely. I love how they took care of each other and anticipated each other’s needs. Trevor and Stasi share a great chemistry. (I love the red hearts that fly about their heads.) The mystical happenings in this book kept me guessing to the very end. Fluff and Puff (my two favorite characters) were around, as was Irma, Jazz, and Nick.

I felt that changing the main character was a great way to continue on the series. Jazz has plenty of witchy friends who can get in as much trouble as Jazz – she shouldn’t be alowed to have all of the fun.

Guest Blog: Cheryl Brooks!

author-photo1-2

Today we are lucky to have Cheryl Brooks guest blogging at the book girl! I am in love with her Cat Star Chronicles books, every time I read one it becomes my new favorite book. There is something about the way Ms. Brooks writes that captures my whole attention and doesn’t let go. I just want to say a big THANK YOU to Ms. Brooks for the guest blog and the wonderful books!

————————————————————————————————————————

What draws a reader to a specific book? The cover may catch your eye, but is it enough to hook you? Do you look for a specific author, or do you read the blurb on the back? Do you look for traditional romance, or paranormals? Historical, or contemporary?

I’ve been reading romance novels since I was ten years old and have always been an avid Regency fan. I’ve read every Georgette Heyer in print—many of them multiple times. I’ve read contemporaries and westerns, some chaste and some erotic, but the one thing I never found in my younger days was a science fiction romance.

That was a very long time ago. There are more of them now, and, I’m happy to say, at least three of them are mine. When the first of my Cat Star Chronicles series, Slave, was released, I’m sure a lot of people picked it up because of the cover. Some probably bought it not realizing what it was, and some liked it and some didn’t, but whatever your opinion, you can’t say it’s the same old romance novel.

The series follows the lives of six Zetithian men who were captured and sold into slavery at the end of the war that destroyed their planet. My most recent release, Rogue, continues the story begun by Slave and Warrior, and is the tale of two Zetithian brothers, Trag and Tychar. They have been the pampered pets of a Darconian queen for the past twenty years, and though their lives haven’t been hard, being the lone humanoid males on a planet populated by lizards hasn’t allowed them much in the way of sexual gratification. However, the progressive Queen Scalia has hired a human female, Kyra Aramis, to give piano lessons to her daughter.

Alone on a world filled with intelligent, but fearsome dinosaurs, Kyra is understandably nervous, and the discovery that she is not the only humanoid on the planet offers only a brief comfort. Tychar is assigned to be Kyra’s personal attendant, and though he and Trag are both irresistible, there are two of them, and worst of all, they are slaves to the Queen who has no intention of selling them. Just when things get interesting, rumors of unrest begin flying, and the peaceful planet of Darconia undergoes a major political upheaval, with the offworlders caught in the middle.

In the previous books in this series, Slave and Warrior, the heroes had both endured a life of harsh slavery. However, in Rogue, I took a different tack, giving them to an owner who not only treated them well, but cherished them for their beauty and individuality. The two brothers are similar in appearance, but Tychar is a charming rogue, brought up on his homeworld of Zetith, while his brother, Trag, is a restless renegade who was raised offworld by his uncle, the captain of a space freighter. I wanted to explore the different personalities in an effort to demonstrate that while all Zetithian males exude sexuality, there are still differences, and even when two of them are hers frogueor the taking, a girl can still make a choice.

Just as my heroes are different, so are my heroines. In Slave, Jacinth was a tough, savvy space trader who was never at a loss in difficult situations. Warrior’s heroine, Tisana, was a powerful witch with a sharp tongue and a dry wit. Kyra is a bit more timid, and the fact that she has decided to take a teaching post on a distant world surprises her friends and family alike. However, like all good heroines, she gets the chance to grow in strength as a person and as a woman in love.

What makes this genre so enjoyable is that there are no limits to where my imagination can go. I like fascinating new worlds, adorably sexy heroes, strong heroines, and supporting characters that are grumpy, funny, or just plain weird, so if you’re looking for something different, come on along. I’ll take you places you’ve never even dreamed of.
