storm-watchFrom the back of the book:

Subject: Jason Mauer, National Guard.

Current status: Homeward bound.

Mission: Getting some R & R!

Obstacle: Lizzy Mann. Sexy blast from the past.

After battling a hurricane of catastrophic proportions, Jason needs some downtime - badly! But there’s no rest for the heroic. During another deluge, Jason’s savior skills are suddenly in demand…by his hot friend Lizzy.

She’s fiercely independent. But that doesn’t keep them from having incredible sex as they,ah, ride out the storm!

Jason knows relationships and duty don’t mix. Still, he feels as if he’s being swept away by a flash flood of desire for Lizzy.

The permanent kind…

I love everything that Jill Shalvis writes and STORM WATCH is no exception. STORM WATCH is connected (slightly) to the firefighter blaze books that were released last summer. Jason is one sexy character. He is kind and heroic in his job and that appeals to Lizzy a lot. She has never really gotten over her school girl crush and being in close quarters with Jason proves to be more than she can handle. The chemistry between Jason and Lizzy was fantastic and I couldn’t put the book down. I also really loved the subplot with Lizzy’s sister CeeCee.

never-dareFrom the back of the book:

An Indecent Proposal

Abigail Shaw is a proper young lady, hardly the sort to boldly offer a deal to London’s most distinguished and perfect duke. But Abigail, desperate to save her father’s newspaper business, is after a good scandal. She’d have the sensational headlines that would keep the ton talking - and the family business thriving - if only she could uncover the secrets of Christoper Cabot, the Duke of Madingley. What better way than a pretend romance? Yet, with all his seductive glances and stolen caresses, she somehow has to keep from succumbing to temptation.

Christopher finds Abigail - and her propsal - intriguing. A fake romance with the stunning commoner would allow him time to choose a suitable wife from among the would-be duchesses nipping at his heels. It seems like the perfect plan…as long as he can keep her from uncovering his one deep, dark secret. But as he falls for the cunning beauty, he will be tempted to reveal all - his secret, his heart, and his soul.

Abigail Shaw has an independent streak a mile wide and when she finds out that her father’s business is in trouble she sets to find a solution. The Duke of Madingley is her solution. If she can find out something truly scandalous about the Duke it would save her father’s newspaper. The Duke of Madingley spends his time trying to be perfect and not be a disappointment to his family. These two are drawn to each other, but not for the reasons they think. I found it interesting that Abigail was so confident about her skills as a writer, and her ability to ferret out the truth, but didn’t think she was “good enough” for the Duke. Chris has his own set of issues, but none are really what keeps him apart from Abigail in the beginning. I really liked that this entire book takes place in one location. It really made me able to get a real feel for where the story was taking place. Gayle Callen is becoming one of my favorite historical romance writers.

glory-daysFrom the back of book:

He Knows His Women…

New Jersey PI Josh Preshin takes on all kinds of jobs. Discreet inquiries. Private investigations. Helping women find lost…articles of clothing from his office. Yup, no job too big or too small. Now if only he could figure out how to convince the knockout redhead with the very large knife that he’s not breaking into her grandmother Flo’s apartment. No. He’s Flo’s upstairs tenant. In need of a serious cup of coffee. Yeah, so he’s wearing only a towel. So what?

She’s Got His Number.

Liz Atwater isn’t about to take her eyes off this one - and not just because he’s about six feet worth of smirking, hunky gorgeousness, either. She’s had her share of bad luck with men, and some half naked guy helping himself to your coffee while looking you up and down is not a good sign. Something’s going on with Mr. John Preshin. And Liz intends to do some discreet investigating of her own. He’d better hang on to that towel...

This book was a lot less fun than I expected it to be. From the back blurb, it seemed like it would be a typical contemporary romance between the hunky PI and the relationship-shy redhead. That isn’t what this book is at all. John Preshin is a man hunted by his past, who will sleep with anything and then not remember it. The only funny part of the book is when he wakes up with duck-tape on his chest after such an encounter. The real story of the book is about a girl who hires John to find her father. She comes to him with a list of who it could be and his name is top of the list. Liz’s story isn’t happy either. After a terrible divorce she has moved back to NJ to help her ailing grandmother. I felt as if there was too much going on and not enough focus on any one part of the story. Also, I didn’t feel as if there was any HEA for John and Liz, just a HFN. Liz’s past didn’t reach any closure and John’s past was tied up a little too neatly for my tastes.

mouthFrom the back of the book:

Never Let Me Go

Annie Parks came to Hawaii to settle a score, not spend time handcuffed to a sexy stranger’s bed - even if said stranger saved her from drowning after she was pitched overboard by some goons. Looking at six feet of hard, Hawaiian muscle and gorgeous cool that’s making forgotten parts of her say, “Aloha!,” Annie needs to stay focused. But a side dish of Kane Travers is awfully tempting.

Kauai Police Chief Kane Travers is not a vacation kind of guy. So it figures that when Internal Affairs suspended him, he’d end up rescuing a sarcastic, dishonest, extremely hot redhead who is clearly hiding something. Kane’s got half a mind to give Miss Whoever She Is something she’ll never forget, even if his cop senses tell him she needs his protection. But how can he get her to tell him anything when his mouth won’t stop covering hers?

I really wanted to like this book, but it fell flat for me. I couldn’t empathize with the characters, especially Annie. There was so much that we weren’t told in the beginning that would have helped build up some sympathy for what she was trying to achieve in Hawaii. The same goes for Kane. The very beginning of the book he is complaining about a forced vacation, but it is forever before the reader finds out why. The ending felt rushed once the reader was aware of what was going on in the story. I also felt the relationship aspect of the book wasn’t quite right. Two people who are so unhappy with what is going on in their lives, and that have the determination for revenge like Annie does, wouldn’t drop everything for a quick (or not so quick) tumble.I thought the characters and circumstances completely unrealistic.

seductionFrom the back of the book:

He’s the last unmarried man still standing…but not for long.

To break a centuries-old curse, beautiful, headstrong Lady Kathleen MacDavid knows she must ignore every rule of propriety by seducing - and marrying - the Earl of Norcroft. So she sets off for London, braving scandal and ruin to achieve her goal…until a crazy bump on the head makes her forget nearly everything.

The thrill of winning a bet - that he’d be the last of his set to wed - hasn’t eased the earl’s pain of losing his friends to marriage. Still, he’d be willing to settle down if he could meet someone worthy of his love - and desire. But he has met no such woman, until Kathleen is brought to him. suspicious of her motives, he’s determined to resist her seductive ways. But sometimes even the most proper gentleman finds it expedient to act improperly…

Why did I wait so long to read this book? I absolutely loved it. It had everything I love in a good story, destined lovers, humor, and hot lovin’. I was so wrapped up in this book, that I was reading every chance I had (even at red lights while running errands with the kiddos). The Earl of Norcroft is a rare romantic hero. He knows that he must wed, but refuses to do so without love. Being the last of his friends to remain single isn’t something that sets well with him, but there is nothing to be done about it. Taking off for his place in the country to relax and think about life is his plan, until he meets Kate. Kate is searching for the Earl, not because of love, but to break a 500 year old curse that is causing terrible things to happen to her family. These two come together in a way that was “500 years in the making” and it is explosive. Kate and Oliver’s extended family keep the humor going even when things don’t seem like will work out the way they should. Kate and Oliver have earned a place on my list of favorite couples!
