Review: A Trip with the Tycoon by Nicola Marsh (New Author Challenge)

First Stop: the Taj Mahal

Determined to forget her husband’s infidelity and bring her confident, fiery self back, Tamara Rayne is in India on a trip of a lifetime. Love isn’t on her itinerary, so she hardly notices when blast from her past Ethan Brooks boards her train…

Next Stop: a dream proposal?

The maverick entrepreneur has wanted Tamara ever since he met her. Under the shimmer of the Indian sun, Ethan decides he’s waited long enough…

This book was a hit and a miss for me. I loved the descriptions of India. The food that the characters talked about and the places that they visit made me long to see and taste the same things. The romance between Tamara and Ethan left me cold. I just couldn’t see a connection between the characters. The seemed one dimensional and flat to me. In my opinion there just wasn’t a reason (other than sex) for this couple to be together.

Review: Sliding Home by Kate Angell

41317957From the back of the book:

WHO’D BEEN SLEEPING IN KASON RHODES’S BED?

The left fielder for the Richmond Rogues had returned from six weeks of spring training in Florida to find someone had moved into his mobile home. That person was presently in his shower. And no matter how sexy the squatter might be, Kason wanted her out.

He had his trusty dobie, Cimarron; he didn’t need anyone else in his life. Not even a stubborn tomboy who roused all kinds of wild reactions in him, then soothed his soul with peace offerings of home-cooked meals and kindness. The bad boy of baseball was ready to play hardball if need be, but with Dayne Sheridan firmly planted between his sheets, he found himself. . .

SLIDING HOME.

I read a book by Kate Angell a while ago and didn’t really enjoy it, so I have passed on the other “Rogue” books till now. I borrowed Sliding Home from the library with the thought that if I didn’t enjoy it, I wouldn’t be out the money. So, I read the book and really enjoyed the hell out of it. The story is realistic and the characters relate-able. I loved Dayne. She was feisty and tough. I loved how she stood her ground, even though she was squatting on someone else’s property. Kason took some getting used to, but I came to love him too. This book made me want to go back and give the others that I missed a chance!

SYNOPSIS

When Rebecca Brown goes to New Orleans to stay with her voodoo-obsessed aunt, she finds the beautiful city haunted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Rebecca is also startled to discover a haunting of a different kind: near a graveyard one night, amid the Spanish moss and beneath the moonlight, she meets a ghost girl named Lisette, who has been dead for 150 years. Lisette helps Rebecca unearth an ancient mystery in her aunt’s house, along with some troubling historical truths. Meanwhile, Rebecca must juggle adjusting to her snooty new prep school, developing a serious crush on a handsome boy, and dealing with an elite group of popular girls who may be linked to the ghostly mystery themselves.

Review: Ruined – a ghost story by Paula Morris (New Author Challenge)

ruined_cover-2From the book jacket:

Rebecca Brown couldn’t feel more out of place in New Orleans, where she comes to live while her dad is away on business. She’s staying in a creepy house with her aunt Claudia, who reads tarot cards for a living. And at the snooty prep school, a pack of filthy-rich girls treat Rebecca like she’s invisible. Only gorgeous, unavailable Anton Grey seems to five Rebecca the time of day, but she wonders if he’s got a hidden agenda.

Then one night, among the oak trees in Lafayette Cemetery, Rebecca makes a friend. Sweet, mysterious Lisette is eager to show Revecca the nooks and crannies of New Orleans. There’s just on catch.

Lisette is a ghost.

A ghost with a deep, dark secret, and a serious score to settle.

As Rebecca learns more from her ghost friend – and as she begins to trust Anton Grey – she also uncovers startling truths about her own history. Will Rebecca be able to right the wrongs of the past, or has everything been ruined beyond repair?

This was a very good read. The book takes many twists and turns and leads the reader on an adventure. The main plot is Rebecca trying to learn more about Lisette’s past and to find out how to right the wrongs that she finds. I was completely drawn in by the history and description of post-Katrina New Orleans. I think the way the author did this was the highlight of the book. The book is a young adult book, and the only thing that I didn’t enjoy was the school dynamic that Rebecca has to face. I also expected this to be a scary story since it is called “A Ghost Story”, but there isn’t anything scary about the book.
