Review: No Greater Pleasure by Megan Hart (New Author Challenge)

38875366From the back of the book:

It is at the request of Lord Gabriel Delessan that a Handmaiden of the Order of Solace is delivered to his grand manor house, a weathered stone mansion every bit as intimidating as he. Young and ingenuous Tranquilla Caden arrives to begin her new position of service 0 she is devoted to fulfilling every demand of her new master, to stimulating his mind, to stirring his soul, and to arousing his body.

Yet something happens that Quilla never counted on: she is falling hopelessly in love with the enigmatic man she is required only to service. A man who already has a wife. But that isn’t the only family secret her master holds – and it certainly won’t be the last to threaten Quilla’s most cherished and impossible desire.

This is a fantastic book. It takes place in an alternate universe (I think – there are a few things I couldn’t exactly figure out, but they didn’t hurt the story at all). The Order of Solace is a religious group of nun-like women who give themselves over in service to a master in order to provide pleasure and solace. They are to answer needs before they are known. It is a powerfully emotional book. The different dynamics between characters is amazingly done. I loved how Ms. Hart wrote deep into the secondary characters instead of them just being on the periphery. I can’t wait to read more by this author!

the book girl gives NO GREATER PLEASURE a 5/5!

NaNoWriMo Update

nanowrimo_1_normalI thought that I would post an update every Wednesday with my progress and such.

So far I haven’t been keeping up, but I know that I will still finish. I have written about 3,ooo words and the story is finally starting to flow. Usually when I write the beginning comes really easy, but not this time. Zoe and Alex (my main characters) aren’t behaving the way I think they should and my muse when on strike due to a head cold. Everything is going better now and I hope to catch up on my word count tonight!

For others that are doing NaNo: How’s it going? Is the muse cooperating?

Review: The Year of Living Shamelessly by Susanna Carr

44537902From the back of the book:

Every year, Katie Kramer makes the same resolution: Have a wild affair with her brother’s kinky and wild best friend, Ryder. Every year it’s the same disappointment. It doesn’t help that her good-girl reputation cant’s stand up to the hot competition, or that Ryder’s always seen Katie as just his friend’s innocent sister.

Ryder adores the Kramers. And it’s always been a pleasure to keep an eye out for sweet and uncomplicated Katie. Of course he’d never let on the he’s always had a thing for her – to actually act on it would be impossible. Because Ryder’s got a dirty side only a few girls really appreciate.

He never expected that Katie would make the first move – much less match him, kink for kink. But this year, Katie knows what she wants. With less than a week to show off her X-rated side, she sheds all her inhibitions. When it comes to satisfying a few fantasies, a woman has to be shameless.

I loved this book! It is a straight contemporary that focuses on the relationship between Katie and Ryder. Katie is out to get her man and Ryder is trying to keep his hands off his best friend’s little sister. I am, admittedly, a sucker for the brother’s best friend plot line. I love when the stories have this. Katie spends a year becoming the woman that she thinks Ryder wants. She starts dressing differently, acting differently, and attracting men that had never looked at her before. The Year of Living Shamelessly is a fun, fast read with romance, laughter, and lots of heart.

Skin Game by Ava Gray

Tomorrow there is an amazing book coming out! I was lucky enough to win an advance copy on Dear Author and loved every word! Here is the cover, blurb, and where to buy. I’ll be posting my full review soon.

skin-game Cover blurb:

A beautiful fugitive—wanted dead or alive.
Kyra is a con woman and a particular kind of thief. She steals with a touch, but she only takes one thing: her target’s strongest skill. Which means she can be a fighter, an athlete, a musician, an artist—anything she wants… for a limited time. Heartbroken, she turns her gift toward avenging her father’s murder; with deadly patience, Kyra works her way into casino owner Gerard Serrano’s inner circle. After pulling off the ultimate con, she flees with his money and his pride.

A hit man who never misses the mark.
Reyes has nothing but his work. Pity for Kyra, he’s the best and mercy never sways him once he takes a job. He’s been hired to find out where Kyra hid the cash—and bring her back to face Serrano’s “justice.” Dead will do, if he can’t locate the loot. He’s never failed to complete a contract, but Kyra tempts him with her fierce heat and her outlaw heart. So Reyes has a hell of a choice: forsake his word or kill the woman he might love.

Review: Nice Girls Don’t Date Dead Men by Molly Harper

40521450From the back of the book:

Forever a Bridesmaid, Never an Undead Bride

Once a devoted children’s librarian, Jane Jameson now works at a rundown occult bookstore. Once a regular gal, she’s now a vampire. And instead of a bride, she’s an eternal bridesmaid – which leads her to question where exactly her relationship with her irresistible sexy sire. Gabriel, is headed. Mercurial, enigmatic, apparently commitment-phobic vampires are nothing if not hard to read. While Jane is trying to master undead dating, she is also donning the ugliest bridesmaid’s dress in history at her best friend Zeb’s Titanic-themed wedding. Between a freaked-out groom-to-be, his hostile werewolf in-laws, and Zeb’s mother, hell-bent on seeing Jane walk the aisle with Zeb. Jane’s got the feeling she’s just rearranging the proverbial deck chairs.

Meanwhile, Half Moon Hollow’s own Black Widow, Jane’s Grandma Ruthie, has met her match in her latest fiance. He smells like bad cheese and has a suspicious history of dead spouses. but Jane’s biting her tongue. After all, would a nice girl really think she has a future with a vampire.

This is the second book in the Jane Jameson series. The book is hilarious. Jane finds herself in some very funny situations between being undead and a best friend who is marrying into a wolf pack that thinks him loosing a pinkie toe is hilarious. This was a really fun, quick read. There didn’t really seem to be any major conflict though. There are lots of little things, but no one big thing. I think that this book wasn’t a strong as the first book where Jane was being framed for murder. It read a little like someones journal. Just detailing what was going on in Jane’s life day to day.

the book girl gives NICE GIRLS DON’T DATE DEAD MEN a 3/5.

NaNoWriMo

layout_writer_chichester_05I am participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) for the second time this year. The objective is to write a 50,000 word novel in one month. Working to not self-edit and just get words on the page. I attempted this last year and only made it to 30,ooo words, so I hope to make it the whole 50k this year.

So, because of that there won’t be many book posts for the month. Probably 1-2 a week instead of 3-4. I will be posting my NaNo updates throughout the month though.

Is anyone else doing NaNo this year?? Have you done it before?
