The Book Girl

Review: An Earl to Enchant by Amelia Grey

50770448From the back of the book:

He’s determined not to be a hero…

Lord Morgandale is as notorious as he is dashing, and he’s determined no woman will tie him down. But from the moment Arianna Sweet appears on his doorstep, he cannot resist the lure of her fascinating personality, exotic wardrobe, and tempting green eyes…

She has a deadly secret…

Arianna Sweet never imagined the significance of her father’s research until after his untimely death. Now she is in possession of his groundbreaking discovery, one that someone would kill for. She can’t tell Lord Morgandale her secret, but she knows she needs his help, desperately…

This is one of my favorite historical romance series. These cousins have captivated me since the first book and I was so happy to finally have Morgan’s story. I could not have picked a better match for Morgan than Arianna. They match each other in every way. I love how Morgan falls for her almost instantly, but has to fight it in true rogue fashion. An appearance by Gibby is also delightful. Ms. Grey writes in such a fashion that completely captivates me from the first word and doesn’t let me go until the last. I was so caught up in the book that I almost forgot to pick up my son from school!

I was so excited to learn that there are more books set int he same world on their way. I CAN’T WAIT!! Because I love this book so much, I will be giving away a copy on Friday the 23rd. Come back and comment to win!

Review: Hero at Large by Janet Evanovich

55433504About the book:

It seems like good luck when gorgeous and mysterious Ken Callahan stops to help single mom Christ Nelson with her car. But then she breaks his arm…then his toe…and then his heart. Not easily discouraged, Ken moves into her basement…cooks her potholder in the spaghetti sauce…attempts to seduce her with cookies…and destroys her favorite pan by trying to make a roast in it. All may seem lost for Chris and Ken, until a meddlesome Aunt Edna, a ride on a Zamboni, and a genuine love of family all conspire to turn their luck around.

These older Evanovich romances are so much fun. HERO AT LARGE is a very funny and sweet read. Chris and Ken are a fantastic couple and Aunt Edna is hilarious. This would be a perfect read for fans of the Stephanie Plum books.

Review: Anyone But You by Jennifer Crusie

45941519From the back of the book:

Part basset, part beagle, all Cupid…

For Nina Askew, turning forty means freedom – from the ex-husband, feedom from their stuffy suburban home, freedom to focus on what she wants for a change. And what she wants is something her ex always vetoed – a puppy. A bounch, adorable puppy. Instead she gets…Fred.

Overweight, middle-aged, a bit smelly and obviously depressed, Fred is light-years from perky. But he does manage to put Nina in the path of Alex Moore, her gorgeous, younger-by-a-decade neightbor.

Alex seems perfect – he’s a sexy, seemingly sane, surprisingly single E.R. doctor – but the age gap convinces Nina that anyone but Alex would be better relationship material. But with every silver-haired stiff she dates, the more she suspects it’s the young, dog-loving doc she wants to sit and stay!

Another Crusie re-read! ANYONE BUT YOU is a fun read. I love the different dynamic of this book with the older heroine/younger hero. And Fred steals the book! I love that silly dog. For the most point this is a funny story, but there are some surprisingly emotional parts too. This is the perfect read for a spring day.

The book girl gives ANYONE BUT YOU a 4/5!

Review: A Touch of Scandal by Jennifer Haymore

55086242From the back of the book:

The last thing Garrett, Duke of Calton, expects to find while tracking his sworn enemy is the delectable, mysterious Kate. This beautiful servant girl rouses a longing the battle-scared ex-soldier had never hoped to feel again. But when she turns out to be the sister of the man he seeks, he’s convinced he’s been betrayed.

Kate knows her duty to her family, yet how can she ignore Garrett’s powerful pull on her heart? Or the heady temptation of his stolen – and sizzling – kisses? Scandal has followed the duke since the war. Now the greatest shock of all is on its way – the one that can separate Garrett and Kate forever.

I absolutely loved A HINT OF WICKED – the first book by Jennifer Haymore, so I’d been looking forward to this book for a long time. A TOUCH OF SCANDAL is fantastic. Kate and Garrett are a great couple. I knew after the end of the first book that it would take a very special woman to make Garrett believe in love again and Kate is a very special character. The romance between Garrett and Kate is very face paced and full of intrigue. Neither is willing to admit who they truly are until they have to and by then it is a little too late. Kate is faced with choosing between her family or love, a hard choice for anyone to make. I was thrilled with this book and cannot wait for Garrett’s sisters story.

Oh – and on a personal note. This book has a quote from the book girl inside! It is the first time I have seen a quote from the blog in an actual print book. So, tomorrow I’ll be giving away a copy of A TOUCH OF SCANDAL to celebrate my quote!!

Review: Promise Me Tonight by Sara Lindsey

48378391From the back of the book:

Isabella is determined to marry James…

Isabella Weston has loved James Sheffield for as long as she can remember. Her come-0ut ball seems the perfect chance to make him see her in a new light.

James is determined never to marry…

James is stunned to find the impish girl he once knew has blossomed into a sensual goddess. And if he remembers his lessons, goddesses always spell trouble for mortal men.

A compromise is clearly necessary.

When Izzie kisses James, her artless ardor turns to a masterful seduction that drives him mad with desire. But, no stranger to heartbreak, James is determined never to love, and thus never to lose. Can Isabella convince him that a life without love might be the biggest loss of all?

This is the first book in a series by new author Sara Lindsey. I really liked the book. There were a few places where I wanted to slap some sense into Izzie and James, but on the whole is was a delightful story. Izzie has loved James for most of her life and one thing I really loved was how the character knew that her love had grown from childish love to adult love. A lot of time in plot lines like this one there isn’t any indicator that the heroine has grown past that “puppy” love she felt for the hero as a child. There was a lot of growth for both Izzie and James. I loved all of Izzie’s family and especially can’t wait for her brother Henry’s story!

Review: What the Lady Wants by Jennifer Crusie

54357298From the back of the book:

If he’s Cary Grant, where’s his Girl Friday?

Mitch Peabody was learning pretty fast that the life of a private detective was nothing like the movies. He’d envisioned a world of tough-talking detectives and smart-mouthed, stunning dames. Instead he saw case after case of cheating husbands, suspicious wives and unsuspecting mistresses… until she walked through the door.

Right down to her stilettos, Mae Sullivan was a knockout with a lethal body – and a lethal family to go with it. There was something not quite on the up-and up about her, but she came with a case he couldn’t afford to refuse…and left him with a case of lust he hadn’t had since high school. It didn’t take long for him to fall for her, hook, line and sinker. but was Mae interested only in catching the double-crossing crooks who murdered her uncle…or did the lady want to catch him?

This was a re-read for me. I love anything Jennifer Crusie writes and will go through phases where I re-read all of my favorites. I like this book because of Mitch. I love the way he looks out for Mae even if he doesn’t think that’s what he is doing. I also love the secondary characters – the slutty housekeeper, the mistress, the mobster, etc. They make the story funny and keep the plot flowing perfectly. This book is perfect for a spring day when you want something light, funny, and quick to read.

Review: Mad, Bad and Blonde by Cathie Linz

44450659From the back of the book:

When a man’s too good to be true…

Jilted on her wedding day for being the queen of dullsville, librarian Faith West goes on her Italian honeymoon solo, hoping to leave her pain behind. That could take a miracle, but she’s about to discover miracles do happen. His name is Caine Hunter. Smart, spontaneous, hot, and sexy, he had her feeling like a real woman for the first time ever – until the truth surfaces…

A former Force Recon marine turned PI, Caine was doing what he does best: spying. And his new target was Faith. But falling for the enemy’s daughter was never part of his plan. Caine is a man used to winning, but this time his mission is much more personal – and now that he and Faith are both back in Chicago, the rewards could be, too…

This book is a fun contemporary romance. Faith undergoes a lot of growth throughout the book, making some mistakes along the way. I really liked how she wasn’t perfect in the choices she made – they were realistic. I wasn’t too fond of Caine in the beginning but came to like him a lot. The chemistry between the main characters is great and the story moves at a fast pace. I was rooting for Faith and Caine to find their happily ever after and wasn’t disappointed at all! Fans of Erin McCarthy and Julie James will enjoy this book.
