The Book Girl

Review: Exclusively Yours by Shannon Stacey

65832432From netGalley:

When Keri Daniels’ editor finds out she has previous carnal knowledge of reclusive bestselling author Joe Kowalski, she gives Keri a choice: get an interview or get a new job.

Joe’s never forgotten the first girl to break his heart, so he’s intrigued to hear Keri’s back in town-and looking for him. Despite his intense need for privacy, he’ll grant Keri an interview if it means a chance to finish what they started in high school.

He proposes an outrageous plan-for every day she survives with his family on their annual camping and four-wheeling trip, Keri can ask one question. Keri agrees; she’s worked too hard to walk away from her career.

But the chemistry between them is still as potent as the bug spray, Joe’s sister is out to avenge his broken heart and Keri hasn’t ridden an ATV since she was ten. Who knew a little blackmail, a whole lot of family and some sizzling romantic interludes could make Keri reconsider the old dream of Keri & Joe 2gether 4ever.

This was my first read from the new Carina Press and sparked an entire day of reading their books. I absolutely loved EXCLUSIVELY YOURS! It is a fantastic contemporary romance that has the reader cheering for the high school sweethearts to reunite. I’m not an outdoors person at all, but I really dug the parts of the story that take place on the ATVs – they are hilarious. Ms. Stacey writes with such humor that had me laughing out loud at the antics of Joe, Keri, and Joe’s very large family. There are also some heart-wrenching moments between the main characters and other couples on the camping trip. EXCLUSIVELY YOURS is such a well written book with heart and laughter. If you are looking for a Carina Press book to try I recommend starting with Exclusively Yours!

Review and Giveaway – TO SURRENDER TO A ROGUE by Cara Elliot

47219044From the back of the book:

An expert in antiquities, Lady Alessandra della Giamatti arrives in Bath to excavate newly discovered Roman ruins – only to find herself caught in the web of a blackmailer threatening to expose her scandalous past. The one man who can help her is Lord James “Black Jack” Pierson, a fellow member of the expedition and a sinfully handsome rogue whose tempting presence ignites a different sort of danger.

Jack has clashed with Alessandra in the past, so when she suddenly surrenders her body he can’t help being suspicious. Is she a scheming temptress? Or is she truly a lady in trouble? As desire and deceptions swirl around them, Alessandra and Jack must find a way to win each other’s trust. For if they don’t work together to uncover a shocking truth, their enemy – and their own simmering passions – may destroy them and everything they cherish.

TO SURRENDER TO A ROGUE is the second book in the Circle of Sin series. I didn’t really care for the first book (TO SIN WITH A SCOUNDREL), but decided to give this one a chance. I really enjoyed this book. Alessa and Jack are an interesting couple. I loved their fighting and bickering. This added to the sexual tension of the story! Alessa has a terrible secret in her past and no one to lean on until Jack comes into her life. My favorite part of the book was when she finally lets him in and he doesn’t flinch at what happened in the past and promises to help her no matter what. It is so romantic. My only problem was how long it took for the couple to come to their senses about each other. It was at least 3/4 of the way through the book. I would have liked for that to happen a bit earlier. I’m looking forward to the next book in this series.

Review: Crazy For Love by Victoria Dahl

63700326Summary via Netgalley

Chloe Turner thought she was going to marry the perfect man-until her fiancé’s plane crashed. And then she got
the really bad news: he’d tried to fake his own death to avoid marrying her. Now America’s most famous
bridezilla (a tag she most definitely does not deserve), Chloe escapes to a remote island to avoid the paparazzi. And right next door is a man who just might be the cure
for Chloe’s heartache….

A magnet for wild, complicated women, Max Sullivan is relieved to have finally found someone “normal.” Chloe is his girl-next-door fantasy come to life, and best of all, she gets him. With her, he can be himself, a treasure-hunting millionaire who desperately wants out of his sexy but reckless job. But when Chloe’s notoriety catches up with them, will their torrid romance make it to the mainland?

I admit that I am a huge, squealing fan-girl when it comes to Victoria Dahl. She is one of my favorite writers, so when I found CRAZY FOR LOVE available on netGalley I jumped all over it. CRAZY FOR LOVE is the perfect contemporary romance to read this summer. The characters are fun, the location tropical, and the romance hot. Chloe is a little different than the heroine’s that Ms. Dahl has written about in the past. Her vulnerability isn’t hidden. We know what is worrying her and what she is working hard to overcome. I loved how fearless she was when it came to Max and how strong she was in other parts of her crazy life. The subplot between Chloe and her friend Jen, as well as Jen’s relationship with Max’s brother added to the story rather that taking anything away. Sometimes subplots will overshadow the main part of the story, but that certainly isn’t the case here. I can’t wait for this book to actually be released. I will be at the bookstore that morning making sure I get a copy for my keeper shelf!

Review: The Wolf Next Door by Lydia Dare

57287432From the back of the book:

They can’t even be in the same room together…

Ever since their failed elopement years ago, Prisca Hawthorne has taunted, insulted, and in every way tried to push him away. If only her heart didn’t break every time Lord William Westfield left her…

But staying apart is even worse…

Lord William throws himself into drinking, gambling, and debauchery and pretends not to care about Prisca at all. But when he returns to find a rival werewolf vying for her hand, he’ll stop at nothing to claim the woman who should have been his all along.

Can Prisca forgive the unforgivable, or are the moon-crossed lovers going to be forced into a battle of wills that could be fatal?

THE WOLF NEXT DOOR is the third book in the Westfield brothers trilogy. I think that this book was the best out of the three. William and Prisca are obviously meant for each other and I loved their squabbles back and forth. I also really liked that we got to see the whole family together. In the previous two books William was with either Simon or Benjamin, but never were the three brother’s together. There were a few times when I did not like Williams actions in regard to Prisca, but they were always very genuine to the character. The dialog  and the story both move at a fast pace and kept me reading way late into the night. I found this book, and the previous two, to be fantastic additions to the historical romance genre.

Review: STRAIGHT UP by Deirdre Martin

45084771From the back of the book:

Even a man on the run can enjoy the thrill of the chase…

After getting on the bad side of New York’s Irish mob, Liam O’Brien thought he could weather the storm back in Ireland. Working as a bartender in his parents’ old village of Ballycraig, he’s not looking for any trouble. But he could use a bit of fun.

Aislinn McCafferty has already been scorned once by a man at the wedding altar. Now, any man who tries to woo her is quickly and coldly dispatches. The unknowing Liam soon learns this the hard way – and is immediately intrigued.

Eagerly accepting a wager from the pub’s owner, Liam begins a determined pursuit of the stubborn and beautiful Aislinn, who in turn uses all of her wiles to rid herself of the charmingly determined Yank. But neither of them expects this donnybrook of the sexes to turn into love…

I was anxiously awaiting Liam’s story and I wasn’t disappointed. I loved the how this couple falls in love. Liam falls for the stubborn Aislinn and knows that he has his work cut out for him. I liked the way she made him work for her attention. Isn’t it almost every woman’s fantasy to have someone so captivated with them they will do anything to see them? My only problem with this story comes at the end. It’s hard to express without giving away a major plot point, but I can say that things happen rapidly at the end. It felt as though the story was moving at a good pace and then we hit Mach speed. STRAIGHT UP would have been perfect if not for this one thing, but it was a pretty big thing for me.

Back Cover Blurb of TEN THINGS I LOVE ABOUT YOU by Julia Quinn

54527803From the back of the book:

Ten Things You Should Know About This Book

1. Sebastian Grey is a devilishly handsome rogue with a secret.

2. Annabel Winslow’s family voted her The Winslow Most Likely to Speak Her Mind AND The Winslow Mist Likely to Fall Asleep in Church.

3. Sebastian’s uncle is the Earl of Newbury, and if he dies without siring an heir, Sebastian inherits everything.

4. Lord Newbury detests Sebastian and will stop at nothing to prevent this from happening.

5. Lord Newbury has decided that Annabel is the answer to all of his problems.

6. Annabel does not want to marry Lord Newbury, especially when she finds out he once romanced her grandmother.

7. is shocking, 8. is delicious, and 9 is downright wicked, all of which lead the way to

10. Happily. Ever. After.

This isn’t a review (I haven’t finished the book yet), but I absolutely love the back cover blurb for this book. A lot of the time the blurb doesn’t come close to matching what’s between the pages and I get frustrated. This list of 10 things is spot on and fits the tone of the book perfectly. Has anyone read this book yet? What did you think of it and do you agree that the back cover blurb is perfect?
