The Book Girl

Review: THE DEMON IN ME by Michelle Rowen

48378007From the back of the book:

HELL HATH NO FURY…

Fate has led Eden Riley to becomes a “psychic consultant” to the police, even though her abilities are unreliable at best. Those paranormal powers are about to get her into a jam she couldn’t have predicted: After her hunky police detective partner guns down a serial killer in front of her, Eden realizes that she’s quite literally no longer alone. A voice in her head introduces himself as Darrak. He’s a demon. But not in a bad way!

…LIKE A WOMAN POSSESSED.

Darrak lost his original body three hundred years ago, thanks to a witch’s curse. This is the first time he’s ever been able to speak directly to a host, plus there’s a bonus: Eden’s psychic energy helps him to take form during daylight hours. He wants to use this chance to find a way to break his curse – finally. Otherwise, Eden’s going to have to learn to live with this sexy demon…like it or not.

BUT SHE THINKS SHE MIGHT LIKE IT.

THE DEMON IN ME is a light paranormal story. It isn’t really a romance, but there are some romantic moments. I can’t wait to see what develops between the characters in the rest of the series. Darrak is a hoot. There were so many times I laughed out loud while reading this book. My husband kept asking me what was so funny. The premise of this book is very different. I loved the two characters in one body. It sets up a lot of funny (an not-so-funny) moments. Eden is a little flat and I hope that as the series progresses she becomes more 3 dimensional. I liked Eden, I just felt that she was overshadowed by Darrak and Ben. Ben, the hunky cop, didn’t get enough page time either. I was interested in learning more about him and hope that we will in other books. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was what happens between Eden and Ben and the path Ben follows. I wanted more of Eden trying to date Ben while Darrak is in her smarting off about Ben. All in all this book was just meh, but I can see the great potential for the series and can’t wait to read the next book.

Review: NEVER A BRIDE by Amelia Grey

56735744About the book:

Her name is on everyone’s lips . . .
When he left for America six years ago, the handsome Viscount Stonehurst never suspected that he would return home to England to find his lovely fiancé embroiled in the scandal of the decade. The woman he planned on making his wife has been kissing every man in London . . . except him!

But scandal doesn’t matter in search of the truth . . .
Engaged and then abandoned, Mirabella Wittingham is determined to find the man who drove her cousin to suicide, even if it means ruining her reputation and disgracing herself in the process . . .When her plans go awry, Mirabella has no choice but to turn to her long-lost fiancé for help. But can she trust the man who deserted her so many years ago, or is he destined to fail her yet again?

NEVER A BRIDE is a fantastic romance. The story has some hints of mystery that keep the plot moving quickly. Mirabella is such a fun character. She is a very loyal to her friends – something to her own detriment. There were a few times that her insistence on doing things that weren’t proper irritated me a little, but I think that sometimes that kind of a response actually makes the book better. Camden is the perfect hero. He is protective, but not to the point of being overbearing. These two together have a lot of chemistry. I loved the concept of a six year engagement between the couple even though they have never met. It led to a very interesting relationship between Camden and Mirabella.

Ms. Grey’s writing pulls me in immediately. I have read her other novels and loved each one. She is quickly becoming my favorite historical author. The writing is always full of emotion and humor. This book is a re-release, but even if you have already read it NEVER A BRIDE is worth re-reading.

Review: Liberating Lacey by Anne Calhoun

670767951About the book:

Newly divorced Lacey Meyers wasted too many years yawning through sex in the missionary position. Now she’s looking for a hookup with a man who can make her shatter. What she gets is a hot younger cop with handcuffs. . .and he’s not afraid to use them. Hunter Anderson knows the score-though classy, successful women like Lacey might play with guys like him, at the end of the evening, they walk. But when one night leads to another and then another, he finds himself getting too attached to a woman he can’t have. Lacey knows Hunter-gorgeous, hard-edged and eight years younger-won’t want anything permanent. No matter how hot and daring he makes her first public sex, quickie, backseat encounter and secret fantasy role-play, she can’t mistake adventurous sex for emotional involvement. They both know it’s got to end, and soon, or someone’s going to get hurt. But can either of them go back to life without the other?

I downloaded the sample of this book after reading several tweets about how great the book was. I read the sample and immediately bought the book. (Which is a big deal for me. I don’t like to pay $9.99 for an ebook!) Lacey and Hunter are both fantastic character and both have so much more to them that it originally seems. I loved how Lacey’s independence, she knows what she needs and she works to get it. She really doesn’t need liberating in any real sense. She just needs someone to be herself with. I thought that Hunter was the one who changed the most throughout the story. He had always been a player in the past and learns what it is really like to be in a relationship. There is a lot of really hot sex in this book, but never does it seem gratuitous. The sexual relationship between Lacey and Hunter is just as important as the emotional one. It is what brings them closer to each other and teaches them things about themselves that they wouldn’t have otherwise learned. I will definitely be looking for more by this author.

Book #1

63878057 THE RECESSIONISTAS

It’s the day after Labor Day, 2008, and the bottom is about the drop out of the economy. Hedge fund owner John Cutter is in the process of an ugly divorce and nearly in financial ruin, except for the assets he is hiding from his wife Mimi in the Cayman Islands. When he concocts a scheme to redeem himself, he enlists Lehman Brothers investment banker Blake Somerset as an accomplice. Blake is ripe for recruitment given that he too is on the verge of being in dire financial straits given Lehman’s decline and imminent bankruptcy. Blake’s socialite wife Grigsby is barely aware of her changing world to begin with, and has no idea of the perilous situation her husband is about to enter into. As autumn unfolds, Grigsby’s fairytale life starts to unwind. Meanwhile, John and Blake’s scheme comes to light when street-smart Renee Parker begins her new position as John’s executive assistant. Convinced something is amiss, she enlists her friend Sasha Silver, CEO of Silver Partners, to help her decipher what is happening. This story of expulsion from a modern-day Garden of Eden captures what happens when economic decline spells ruin for Manhattan’s pampered elite.

73187330SHE’S GONE COUNTRY

Shey Darcy, a 39-year-old former top model for Vogue and Sports Illustrated led a charmed life in New York City with a handsome photographer husband until the day he announced he’d fallen in love with someone else. Left to pick up the pieces of her once happy world, Shey decides to move back home to Texas with her three teenage sons. Life on the family ranch, however, brings with it a whole new host of dramas starting with differences of opinion with her staunch Southern Baptist mother, her rugged but overprotective brothers, and daily battles with her three sons who are also struggling to find themselves. Add to the mix Shey’s ex-crush, Dane Kelly, a national bullriding champ and she’s got her hands full. It doesn’t take long before Shey realizes that in order to reinvent herself, she must let go of an uncertain future and a broken past, to find happiness–and maybe love–in the present.
