REVIEW: DEADLY LIES by Cynthia Eden

732557721From the back of the book:

SHE WANTS TO HIDE THE PAST

FBI Special Agent Samantha Kennedy is haunted by memories of the serial killer who abducted her. To keep the darkness at bay, she pretends to be a different, more confident woman. This Samantha doesn’t fear every unknown face. So she throws caution to the wind and shares a night of unbridled passion with a handsome stranger.

HE NEEDS TO UNCOVER THE TRUTH

One night isn’t enough for successful entrepreneur Max Ridgeway. He wants more of the sexy, smart, mysterious woman who slipped away before dawn. When they meet again, their attraction is undeniable – until his stepbrother goes missing, and Max realizes that Samantha isn’t who she seems. But they must trust each other to trap a ring of bloodthirsty kidnappers before the nightmares that terrorize Sam becomes irrevocably real.

AS A MERCILESS CRIMINAL SPINS A WEB OF…

DEADLY LIES

The third book in the SSD series is more character driven than the previous two. I felt like, even though there is a crime being investigated, that DEADLY LIES is mostly about Sam. Sam has to work to overcome the trauma that she faced in DEADLY FEAR and is barely holding on when DEADLY LIES begins. After the previous two book featuring the highly capable members of the SSD and Sam being a secondary character, I was very glad that we got her story. Max is a very complicated character and at times I felt he was a little too much for Sam, but in the end I was sure that they were right for each other. DEADLY LIES is full of twists, turns, and lies…a perfect romantic suspense.

REVIEW: DEADLY HEAT by Cynthia Eden

707733541From the back of the book:

SHE WANTS REVENGE…

Six months after her lover died in an arsonist’s blaze, firefighter Lora Spade call sin the FBI’s elite Serial Services Division to track the elusive killer. When Special Agent Kenton Lake is lured into a violent inferno, Lora pulls him to safety and is stunned – not by the fire, but by her own searing attraction to Kent. For the first time in months, she longs for something other than vengeance.

HE WANTS HER…

Kenton’s interest in Lora should be purely professional. But one fleeting kiss and he can’t get her out of his mind. Her combination of strength and vulnerability makes him want to protect her, and that means solving this case – and fast. for even the passion igniting between them can’t hide a terrifying truth: Lora is the next target in a murderer’s sadistic, fiery game.

A VICIOUS KILLER WANTS ONLY…

DEADLY HEAT

This is the second book in the SSD series by Cynthia Eden. I really enjoyed DEADLY HEAT. The suspense is great and done in a way that keeps the reader interested. The plot is simple and there aren’t many twists and turns to take away from the story. Kenton Lake and Lora Spade are very complimentary characters. They are both tough and stubborn, but with a more sensitive side that they don’t show many people. This couple fits almost from the first page. I really enjoyed the way their relationship developed amid all of the chaos caused by the series arsonist. The book is perfect for any fan of romantic suspense where the romance plays a very large part of the story.

REVIEW: SWEPT AWAY BY A KISS by Katharine Ashe

69864119From the back of the book:

A SECRET IDENTITY

When pirates storm viscount Steven Ashford’s ship upon the high seas, it brings him closer than ever to the nefarious criminal he seeks to ruin. Only one seductive detail threatens his victory: the scandalous beauty imprisoned with him, Lady Valerie Monroe. Temptation has never been so intoxicating or so forbidden, for Steven is disguised as a French priest. If they make it off the ship alive, to protect her from his enemies he must never see her again…

AN UNDENIABLE LOVE

Back in England, and under the ton’s scrutiny for a reckless past she hasn’t escaped, Valerie dreams of the breathtaking “man of the cloth” with whom she shared her greatest adventure. Then he reappears in society under his true identity, Viscount Ashford, but, despite the danger, their consuming passion cannot be denied. Now standing in the way of their desire are Valerie’s wounded heart, Steven’s lone destiny, and a villain who will stop at nothing to crush them both.

I loved this book. From the very beginning I was swept up in the adventure and couldn’t put it down. Valerie is headstrong, but not in a way that is annoying. She knows what she wants, but is mature about gaining it. There are no fits or temper-tantrums. She just wants to be treated as if she can make up her own mind and doesn’t want to be lied to. Ashford, on the other hand, isn’t as easy to understand. He is honorable and fighting for justice, but his actions are sometimes hard to figure out. I liked these two as a couple and their love story has an epic feel to it. She wants to be with him, but can’t completely trust him. He wants to be with her, but doesn’t want to put her in danger. There is a lot of sexual tension in this story before the couple gives in to their passions. SWEPT AWAY BY A KISS is wonderfully written and extremely romantic. I can’t wait to read more from this author!

REVIEW: KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK by Stephanie Rowe

84352431FROM THE BACK OF THE BOOK:

HE NEEDED A KILLER WOMAN…

Blaine Underhill was one lucky man. Having recently escaped a century and a half of imprisonment at the hands of an evil witch, he’s determined to save his still-enslaved friend. But in order to do so , he’ll need the help of one of the world’s most lethal women.

SHE WAS DROP DEAD GORGEOUS, LITERALLY…

Trinity Harpswell is sick and tired of being a Black Widow. Having managed to go three years without accidentally killing anyone she loves, she’s one short week away from freeing herself from this killer curse forever.

When Blaine tracks her down and convinces her to help him, little does Trinity know that the next seven days are going to be murder!

KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK is the first book in a new series. I really enjoyed Stephenie Rowe’s previous books and was excited to read this one. I wasn’t disappointed at all. KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK is funny, sexy, and different. There is a lot going on in this book and I almost gave up in the beginning. It took me a while to get into the story, but once I did I couldn’t put it down. KISS AT YOUR OWN RISK is different, because it isn’t your usual shifters and vamps. Trinity is a Black Widow and that is something I’ve never seen in a book before. The book is full of zany characters that add so much to the story. I recommend this book for anyone who wants a fresh and funny urban fantasy.

Review: THE PERFECT BRIDE FOR MR. DARCY by Mary Lydon Simonsen

85699833From the back of the book:

If the two of them weren’t so stubborn…

It’s obvious to Georgiana Darcy that the lovely Elizabeth Bennet is her brother’s perfect match, but Darcy’s pigheadedness and Elizabeth’s wounded pride are going to keep them both from the loves of their lives.

Georgiana can’t let that happen, so she readily agrees to help her not-at-all-snobbish cousin, Anne de Bourgh, do everything within their power to assure her beloved brother’s happiness.

But the path of matchmaking never did run smooth…

THE PERFECT BRIDE FOR MR. DARCY is a fun retelling of PRIDE & PREJUDICE. I loved how the author took the same story and changed it around so that we saw it from a different side. Anne de Bourgh and Georgiana are both lively and fun in this retelling. I love how the author used characters that were briefly a part of the original and made them so much more. The romance and main points of the story stay the same (as they always should). THE PERFECT BRIDE FOR MR. DARCY is a great addition to the PRIDE & PREJUDICE family.

WHATCHA READING WEDNESDAY

snoopyrd1I’m trying to catch up on some historical romances that I bought when they came out, but didn’t have time to read. Right now, I’m reading Liz Carlyle’s ONE TOUCH OF SCANDAL. I’m not very far and I’m having trouble getting into the story. It is confusing and not flowing the way I am used to her books flowing. I’m not sure if I’m going to finish it or not. I try to give books 100 pages before making a decision. What are you reading?

Review: IN THE COMPANY OF VAMPIRES by Katie MacAlister

77909868From the back of the book:

IF ONLY A BROKEN HEART WERE ALL SHE HAD TO DEAL WITH…

But there are Viking ghosts, gods, werebeings, and one sexy-as-sin vampire on Francesca’s case. And her biggest trouble is spelled with a capital L – for Loki, the trickster god who made good on his promised revenge by abducting her mother.

But when Fran arrives at GothFaire to save her mother, things go from bad to worse. Her immortal ex, Benedikt, is there, full of secrets…and with a new girlfriend. Fran must battle not only a power-hungry group that wishes to dominate both the immortal and mortal worlds, but the woman who claimed Ben’s heart. Shape-shifters, vikings, and a town filled with deranged opera fans. It’s a good thing Fran’s no ordinary mortal…

Fran and Ben are characters from Katie MacAlister’s YA series. I loved the YA books and was very excited to see Fran and Ben again. However, the book fell flat. Fran still behaved like the teenager she was in the YA books even though 5 years had passed. Also, I felt like the plot of the book – Fran’s hunt for Loki and her mother – went nowhere. While she does find them, we don’t know why her mother was being held and whether Fran can banish Loki. I’m hoping that this is the set-up for another novel, because there was no real ending to IN THE COMPANY OF VAMPIRES. The romance between Ben and Fran is the only thing that seems decided at the end of the book. I was hoping for more out of this story than I got. I will say that IN THE COMPANY OF VAMPIRES has parts that are very sexy and parts that were very funny. Even though I don’t feel like the story was complete it was an entertaining read.
