The Book Girl

WINNER – BLACK TIES & LULLABIES

I’m back! Our vacation was so much fun and a well needed break. We spent part of the week just the five of us hanging out and then we joined our entire family (34 of us) at a lake resort. The kids had a great time with all of their cousins and the grown-ups had just as much fun catching up with each other. We took boats out on the lake yesterday and spent the whole afternoon playing in the water. I came back very burned (after applying spf 50 four times!) so I’m taking things easy tonight and not unpacking until tomorrow. Luckily our suite has a washer/dryer, so I only brought back a little bit of dirty laundry!

Now for the important stuff – the winner of BLACK TIES & LULLABIES is….

Maria

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

happy-birthday-card-korey-2009This weekend my littlest man turns 5! I can’t believe that it has been 5 years since he came into our lives. He is the sweetest little boy (and also the most stubborn). He loves nothing more than playing on the computer and with his puppy. We are having a big family party while on vacation (our whole family is on vacation together) and he is eating it up. I promised him that I would post something on the blog because I did for his older brother and sister. So here it is:

.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BABY!!!

Review: JUST ONE SEASON IN LONDON by Leigh Michaels

105669670From the back of the book:

HE WOULD SACRIFICE HIS OWN HAPPINESS IN A HEARTBEAT…

Viscount Ryecroft’s lovely sister Sophie is the family’s only hope for climbing out of financial ruin – but Rye has to scrape up the funds to take her to London for the Season, so she can capture a wealthy husband and save them all…

IF ONLY THEY WOULD LET HIM…

Their mother, Lady Miranda, will do anything for the sake of her children – even taking up again with a man she knew and loved long ago…

With so much riding on their one and only Season in London, Rye, Sophie, and Miranda can’t help but get hopelessly entangles with all the wrong people…

This historical romance was unique and romantic. There are really three stories in this one book. Rye, Sophie, and Miranda all find true love during the one season in London. I really enjoyed how we got to see the different romances bloom. Rye’s romance with Portia was my favorite. I loved that he followed his heart instead of going for an heiress. The writing and storytelling in the book is perfection. Any fan of historical romance will love this book.

Review: COVER ME by Catherine Mann

99835128From the back of the book:

IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SIMPLE MISSION…

Pararescueman Wade Rocha fast ropes from the back of a helicopter into a blizzard to save a climber stranded on an Aleutian Island, but Sunny Foster insist she can take care of herself just fine…

BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PASSION, NOTHING IS EVER SIMPLE…

With the snowstorm kicking into overdrive, Sunny and Wade hunker down in a cave and barely resist the urge to keep each other warm…until the discover the frozen remains of a horrific crime…

Unable to trust the shady local police force, Sunny and Wade investigate, while their irresistible passion for each other gets them more and more dangerously entangled…

What a ride! This is a fantastic romantic suspense. I’ve never read a book featuring Pararescuemen and found the whole team fascinating. There is a lot of heat in this book amid the snowy setting. Brick and Sunny are very well matched. They both have great survival instincts and worked as a team rather that the hero leading the way. The mystery is intriguing and the villain sufficiently evil. I think if you are a fan of Suzanne Brockmann this book is a must read!

Review: MAD ABOUT THE DUKE by Elizabeth Boyle

75698562About the book:

madness \’mad-nes\ n (14c): the quality or state of being mad:

a: rage b: insanity c: extreme folly d: ecstasy, enthusiasm.

And, added in the margins of the dictionary owned by James Tremont, the 9th Duke of Parkerton, one additional definition:

e: the state of finding oneself mistaken for a solicitor by a duke-hunting beauty who needs to be enthusiastically taught the true meaning of love.

Rage, insanity, extreme folly, and ecstasy will most likely be involved.

MAD ABOUT THE DUKE was a very fun book. I loved the connection between Elinor and Parkerton. The whole plot centers around Elinor’s search for a Duke and Parkerton’s mistaken identity.  I love how Elinor falls in love with the man she believes to be a solicitor. She is willing to give up her dreams of marrying a wealthy duke for love. I also really enjoyed how this book has characters popping up from lots of past Elizabeth Boyle books – especially Mad Jack! (He’s one of my favorites.) The romance is sweeping and the characters fantastic. A perfect historical romance!

Review and Giveaway: BLACK TIES AND LULLABIES by Jane Graves

100069046From the back of the book:

A good girl can be bad for one night…

Bernadette Hogan doesn’t make mistakes. Not when it comes to caring for her mother, and not at her job protecting Texas’s most eligible – an infuriating – bachelor. Maybe that’s why she’s overcome with guilt after one tiny indiscretion: a passionate fling with him that’s left her confused, intrigued…and pregnant.

but can a bad boy be good for a lifetime?

To self-made millionaire Jeremy bridges, women are like fine wine: if held for too long, they sour. but one wild night with Bernadette changed all that. She makes him laugh, she makes him think, and soon she’s going to make him a father. For the first time, Jeremy wants to be a one-woman man. So how can he convince the fiercely independent Bernadette he’s ready to change from partying playboy to dependable dad – and become the loving husband she deserves?

I loved this book. The banter between Jeremy and Bernadette is hilarious and their romance is both funny and sweet. I loved the way they are complete opposites – she is a tough bodyguard and he is a playboy. The surprise pregnancy brings them together even though they both didn’t have faith that Jeremy could be a good father. There is no mystery to solve or misunderstanding to overcome in this book, the plot is the couple finding their way to happily ever after. BLACK TIES AND LULLABIES is sweet contemporary romance that is an almost perfect romance.

Review: VIPER’S KISS by Shannon Curtis

115833360From NetGalley:

Librarian Maggie Kincaid yearns for excitement-but being accused of espionage is not what she had in mind. Wanted by the police, the FBI and the criminal element, Maggie goes on the run-and runs straight into sexy Luke Fletcher. Unfortunately, when Luke pulls out the handcuffs, it’s not because he has something kinky in mind…

Security expert Luke is intent on seeing the murderous spy known only as Viper brought to justice. The un-spy-like behavior of his fugitive makes him suspect he’s apprehended the wrong woman. Just as they give in to lust, new evidence convinces Luke that Maggie’s not as innocent as she claims to be.

Devastated by Luke’s inability to trust her, Maggie runs again. She’s determined to clear her name, and if that means tracking down a notorious spy even Interpol can’t seem to locate, then that’s exactly what she’ll do…

I LOVED THIS BOOK! I started it late in the evening and missed most of a night’s sleep finishing it. I couldn’t put my Kindle down! Maggie is a fantastic character and I really liked the choices that she made throughout the story. A couple of times she did something stupid, but it was all because of the drama she was caught up in and the fact that she didn’t know who she could trust. The action is so fast-paced and perfectly timed. One of my favorite parts of this story is the ending. ***Kind of a spoiler*** Maggie, having been through a ton of stuff in such a short period, waits. She waits to know that  what she feels for Luke is real and not a reaction to what they had been through together. This made me so happy. It is unique in a romance novel and is what set the book over the top for me!

Review: COWBOYS LIKE US by Vicki Lewis Thompson

109249942From NetGalley:

Real cowboys aren’t born. They’re made…

Logan Carswell has just kissed his professional baseball career goodbye. Goodbye dreams, career and future. For now, though, he’s working at the Last Chance Ranch and the town saloon, where sexy bartender Caro Davis is definitely taking his mind off his troubles….

Caro’s days have been so hectic, she’s forgotten all about the finer aspects of life. Like men. And sex. And really smokin’-hot sex with men like Logan. But when their two worlds collide—and boy, do they ever collide—they both realize that once the gear is off, a cowboy is still a cowboy! Bonus Story Inside: Celebrate the 10th anniversary with Vicki Lewis Thompson’s first Blaze™ book, NOTORIOUS!

I really enjoy the “Sons of Chance” series. How can you not? Sexy cowboys!! COWBOYS LIKE US is actually about an ex-professional baseball player who is visiting the Last Chance ranch after his friend, Alex’s wedding. I liked Logan immediately. He is a little damaged, but not so much that it isn’t a stretch when he is “fixed”.  Caro was just an okay character for me. She is a little bit of a martyr (her Grandmother takes up all of her free time). I felt that her problems with her Grandmother were all solved a little too easily. Six months of daily visits over because all of a sudden the Grandmother has something to do? It didn’t work for me. I did enjoy the romance between Logan and Caro – their chemistry is off the charts and the way the care for each other is very sweet. What I didn’t enjoy was the epilogue. It is an overly obvious set-up for the next book in the series. I can’t stand when an author does this – it almost spoils the ending of the book for me.

This book also contains a bonus book – NOTORIOUS.
