Whatcha Reading Wednesday

I’m reading LADY ALEXANDRA’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE by Sophie Barnes. I am a sucker for the strong female historical character and Alexandra is definitely a strong character. I’m almost halfway through and can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Review: ABOUT LAST NIGHT by Ruthie Knox

About the book:

Sure, opposites attract, but in this sexy, smart, eBook original romance from Ruthie Knox, they positively combust! When a buttoned-up banker falls for a bad girl, “about last night” is just the beginning.

Cath Talarico knows a mistake when she makes it, and God knows she’s made her share. So many, in fact, that this Chicago girl knows London is her last, best shot at starting over. But bad habits are hard to break, and soon Cath finds herself back where she has vowed never to go . . . in the bed of a man who is all kinds of wrong: too rich, too classy, too uptight for a free-spirited troublemaker like her.

Nev Chamberlain feels trapped and miserable in his family’s banking empire. But beneath his pinstripes is an artist and bohemian struggling to break free and lose control. Mary Catherine—even her name turns him on—with her tattoos, her secrets, and her gamine, sex-starved body, unleashes all kinds of fantasies.

When blue blood mixes with bad blood, can a couple that is definitely wrong for each other ever be perfectly right? And with a little luck and a lot of love, can they make last night last a lifetime?

I adored this book. There is so much happening emotionally with both characters. Cath has made mistakes in her life that have made her weary of being happy and finding love. She doesn’t trust herself. Nev has spent his life following the path his family sets forth. After seeing each other many times waiting for the train, they meet after one of Cath’s “mistakes”. She is roaring drunk and he takes her home and takes care of her. Once she is sober their attraction is undeniable and they embark on a relationship that isn’t really a relationship. I love the emotional growth the two characters go through and how they help each other to become whole again. This book made me feel – happy, sad, and everything in between. This book is sure to satisfy readers who love complex character.

Review: COLTERS’ PROMISE by Maya Banks

About the book:

ALL-NEW IN AN EXTRAORDINARY ROMANCE.

Return to the captivating storytelling of New York Times bestselling author Maya Banks, and her stirring saga of three brothers and one indomitable woman—of wounded hearts, family, and forgiveness…

When it came to overcoming the odds of a tragic past, Lily was determined to move on. The three Colter brothers helped her do it. They taught her new ways to love, new dreams to share, and offered her a new life that she never thought possible. Now is a time for celebration, and what better way than with a long-awaited family reunion, a homecoming that will bring together the entire Colter family and a few surprises no one anticipated. But first, there’s something from Lily’s past she still needs to reconcile—even when all the while she is holding close to her heart a newfound secret that will change her future, forever enrich the Colter legacy, and make every promise come true.

I enjoyed this story, but don’t think it should have cost $7.99. It’s short and more like a novella than a full story. I loved getting to see what had been happening with the family since the last book and I’m hoping that the addition of Lauren, Max’s sister, means that there will be a book about her in the future. This really isn’t a “romance” more of a where are they now type of book – an extended epilogue.

Whatcha Reading Wednesday

I am reading HEART OF DARKNESS by Lauren Dane. I have the second in the series, started to read it, and realized that I hadn’t read the first book. I’m really enjoying it. I don’t usually read urban fantasy, but usually love anything Lauren Dane writes. I’m almost finished and then I plan to dive right into CHAOS BURNING.

Review: NEGOTIATING POINT by Adrienne Giordano

About the book:

As a hostage negotiator for Taylor Security, Gavin Sheppard
has just been given the toughest assignment of his career: securing the release
of his boss’s pregnant wife. He’s uneasy negotiating a rescue without the
involvement of the police, but with the life of a woman and her unborn child on
the line there’s no time to play by the rules. He’ll have to work closely with
the one woman who could prove to be a distraction…

Janet Fink, the agency’s tech geek, is conflicted about
working alongside the man she’s irresistibly attracted to. Though she’s
determined not to risk her career by getting involved with a coworker, especially
a superior, she can’t forget the passionate kiss they once shared…

With the kidnappers’ deadline fast approaching, Gavin and
Janet must combine their skills to bring the missing woman home alive. But
their undeniable chemistry is making it difficult to keep their relationship
purely professional…

NEGOTIATING POINT is a short glimpse into the world of the Private Protectors. Several characters from the previous books feature prominently.  The story revolves around Roxann’s kidnapping and how Gavin and Janet work to get her freed. I didn’t like the way the relationship between Gavin and Janet begins. They spend too much time thinking about getting one another naked and not focusing on making sure that Roxann is safe. It was odd to me that they would be having sex in between negotiating her freedom. The story also felt rushed and not fleshed out.

Review: SLOW SUMMER KISSES by Shannon Stacey

About the book:

Anna Frazier is used to living life at 100 mph, but being downsized out of a job in the financial industry has her permanently stalled. With nowhere to go, go, go,Anna hails a cab to her grandparents’ neglected New Hampshire camp to plan her next move. It seems like a good idea—until she realizes there’s no takeout to be had and the boy next door has grown into a sexy but surly recluse.

Cameron Mayfield knows he can kiss his peace and quiet goodbye when Hurricane Anna blows in. She was loud and bossy as a ten-year-old—and besides developing some attractive curves, she hasn’t changed. Cam’s not looking for a relationship, especially not with a woman like Anna. He nearly broke down on that road once before. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

It’s not long before their sizzling attraction leads to smoking-hot kisses. But as the days get shorter, Anna must decide if she’s found a new road to happiness, or just taken a detour.

25,000 words

SLOW SUMMER KISSES is a delightful contemporary romance. Even though it is very short, the story feels complete and the characters are completely fleshed out. Anna and Cam begin the story not really caring for each other. Cam is consistently rude to Anna, but Anna is just attracted to him no matter how he behaves. I loved the banter between the two characters and how it changes as their feelings for one another change. Their story is romantic and sweet.

Review and Giveaway! THIEF OF SHADOWS by Elizabeth Hoyt

About the book:

A MASKED MAN . . .

Winter Makepeace lives a double life. By day he’s the stoic headmaster of a home for foundling children. But the night brings out a darker side of Winter. As the moon rises, so does the Ghost of St. Giles-protector, judge, fugitive. When the Ghost, beaten and wounded, is rescued by a beautiful aristocrat, Winter has no idea that his two worlds are about to collide.

A DANGEROUS WOMAN . . .

Lady Isabel Beckinhall enjoys nothing more than a challenge. Yet when she’s asked to tutor the Home’s dour manager in the ways of society-flirtation, double-entendres, and scandalous liaisons-Isabel can’t help wondering why his eyes seem so familiar-and his lips so tempting.

A PASSION NEITHER COULD DENY

During the day Isabel and Winter engage in a battle of wills. At night their passions are revealed . . . But when little girls start disappearing from St. Giles, Winter must avenge them. For that he might have to sacrifice everything-the Home, Isabel . . . and his life.

The fourth book in the Maiden Lane series is a wonderful love story full of double lives and hidden emotions. The story revolves around Winter and Isabel, the choices they made in the past and the ones they must make for their future. I adore Winter Makepeace. He is a fantastically written character. The one thing that makes him stand out is he is a virgin. He has real reasons for remaining a virgin that all disappear in the face of his attraction to Isabel. The love scenes between Winter and Isabel are incredibly hot. Isabel is unique as well – she is feisty and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about the decisions she makes. She admits to loving bedsport and won’t apologize for it.  The Ghost of St. Giles (Winter) features prominently in the story and it’s through this other side of Winter that the reader learns the most about him. Both characters are afraid of emotion and have to learn to open up and express how they are feeling. I loved the changes in the characters and how they learn to really be themselves.
