Review: NOBODY’S ANGEL by Stacy Gail

9781426894961_p0_v2_s260x420

About the book:

Investigative journalist Kendall Glynn is horrified when a friend and colleague signs off permanently during a live newscast, jabbing a pen into his jugular. Kendall’s no expert, but judging by the strange white veil in the anchorman’s eyes, she would swear he was a man possessed.

A descendant of the accursed Nephilim, Zeke Reece prowls San Francisco by night, keeping the city free from paranormal phenomena. But even he is no match for whatever malevolent force is behind a recent rash of murder-suicides. And when a beautiful tenacious reporter becomes the next target, Zeke has no choice but to stay close to her, until he can find the evil spirit and cross it over.

The closer Kendall gets to the truth, the more danger she’s in. Fortunately, a sexy and mysterious masked stranger keeps swooping in to the rescue. Kendall’s life depends on finding who or what is responsible for the killings, before it finds her.

NOBODY’S ANGEL is a departure from the contemporary and historical romances I usually read, but after reading Ms. Gail’s holiday novella I wanted to read more by her. I wasn’t disappointed. For a novella there is a lot of story and it is very well done. Kendall and Zeke have insane chemistry from the first time they meet – even though Kendall is in shock after seeing someone die and being covered in blood. I loved Kendall’s drive to find out what was happening around her. Zeke is mysterious and it takes Kendall awhile to figure out just who and what he is. I loved that although he had trouble accepting himself, Kendall did not. There was creepiness to the story, a darkness that I’m not used to reading, but really enjoyed. I really liked the way the good vs. evil part of the story was written. This was a pretty perfect novella and a great introduction to the Earth Angel series. I can’t wait to read the next book.

Whatcha Reading Wednesday

9780380776160_p0_v1_s260x420I posted about my reading slump on Facebook the other day. I’ve been having a hard time finding a book I really want to read. I’ve started a bunch, but not really liked them once I started. I’ve decided to reread one of my favorite books in hopes that it will get me out of the reading slump. Today I’m going to start reading LORD OF SCOUNDRELS by Loretta Chase. I adore this book and have read it several times.

Do you have a book that you read over and over?

Review: FALLING FOR HER FIANCE by Cindy Madsen

2940015969276_p0_v1_s260x420About the book:

Danielle and Wes have been best friends since college, so when Wes needs a date for his sister’s wedding and Dani needs a partner for her company’s retreat, they devise the perfect plan: a fake engagement to get through both events unscathed. Adrenaline-junkie Wes can prove to both his ex and his family that he’s well and truly moved on, and serious-minded Dani can prove to her boss that she’s worthy of the promotion he seems to only want to give to a family-oriented employee.

But amid the fake swoons, fake kisses, and forced proximity, neither expects the very real feelings that develop. There’s nothing more dangerous than falling for your best friend…but what if the landing is worth the fall?

I love the best friends to lovers trope – throw in a fake engagement and I’m in heaven… if it works well. For me, FALLING FOR HER FIANCE didn’t work. I never felt the connection between Dani and Wes. Wes kept remarking that he liked her because she was “one of the guys” and she kept saying there was no pressure when around him. They have friend chemistry, but I didn’t “feel” the romantic chemistry between them. The story also felt too long. It seemed as if the couple was finally going to get together and something else would get in their way…repeatedly.

Even though the story didn’t really work for me, I loved the authors writing style and voice. The dialog is witty and the characters are all very funny and three-dimensional. I will definitely be reading something else by this author.

Review: THE LASS WORE BLACK by Karen Ranney

9780062027801_p0_v1_s260x420About the book:

Catriona Cameron was once famed for her seductive beauty and charm. Now she saw no one, hiding from the world . . . and no one dared break through her self-imposed exile.

No one, that is, until Mark Thorburn burst into her home, and Catriona’s darkened world began to have color again. Thorburn, secretly the heir to an Earldom, claimed he was a footman. But Catriona didn’t care about the scandal their passion could cause . . . for his very touch sparked her back to a life of sensuality, one she thought she’d never have again.

Little does she know that Mark is part of a masquerade. One that will end when they become the target of a madman set on revenge. Mark realizes he will have to do more than win her love . . . he will have to save her life as well.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I loved parts of the story and there were other parts that I didn’t like at all. I almost didn’t read past the first few chapters, because I just couldn’t find anything likable about Catriona in the beginning of the book. In fact, I didn’t really warm up to her until close to the very end. The reason I kept reading was Mark. His character was so unique and interesting that I wanted to know more about him and I really liked the way he dealt with Catriona after her accident. I enjoyed the romance between Catriona and Mark. His attention to her and the way that he doesn’t pity her or focus on her injuries pull her out of her self-imposed prison and also cause her to take stalk of her life and realize what’s missing. She truly becomes a better person because of his love. Mark also changes. He becomes less focused on his work and realizes there is more to life than medicine. The ending to the story left me less than satisfied. It didn’t feel like the story was truly over and that there should have been something more. It just ended in an abrupt manner that to me fell flat.

Review: ALL HE EVER DREAMED by Shannon Stacey

9780373777587_p0_v1_s260x420

About the book:

Josh Kowalski is tired of holding down the fort—better known as the Northern Star Lodge—while his siblings are off living their dreams. Now that his oldest brother has returned to Whitford, Maine for good, Josh is free to chase some dreams of his own.

As the daughter of the lodge’s longtime housekeeper, Katie Davis grew up alongside the Kowalski kids. Though she’s always been “one of the guys”, her feelings for Josh are anything but sisterly. And after a hot late-night encounter in the kitchen, it’s clear Josh finally sees her as the woman she is.

Katie’s been waiting years for Josh to notice her, but now that he has, she’s afraid it’s too late. Giving her heart to a man who can’t wait to leave town is one sure way to have it broken. But Josh keeps coming up with excuses not to leave—could it be that everything he’s ever wanted is closer than he could have imagined?

I absolutely love the Kowalski’s and hate that we are quickly running out of them! I’m hoping that the Kowalski sister – Liz – get’s her own book (and ends up with Officer Drew), but Josh is the last of the Maine Kowalski brothers. I was very excited about his book, because the previous two had been leading up to his romance with Katie. In both Mitch’s and Ryan’s book we would see glimpses of Katie’s unrequited love and Josh’s complete ignorance that the woman for him was right there. In ALL HE EVER DREAMED Katie and Josh were finally going to get there happily ever after, but I wasn’t sure how Josh’s dream to escape Maine and the North Star Lodge would figure in with his relationship with Katie. I love the way Ms. Stacey wrote their romance. It’s funny, romantic, sexy, and satisfying on every level. I felt that it felt true to the characters and how they had behaved through the previous books. I loved that there wasn’t an immediate jump from friends into the romance – there was an awkward period in between where they aren’t sure what they are or how they should behave. The whole romance felt very realistic. ALL HE EVER DREAMED is my favorite book so far for 2013!

Whatcha Reading Wednesday

9780373777587_p0_v1_s260x420I haven’t read much this week. We had company over the weekend, Monday the kids were home from school, and last night was date night. When I’ve been able to sneak in a little bit of quality time with my kindle I’ve been reading ALL HE EVER DREAMED by Shannon Stacey. I’ve been waiting for Josh and Katie’s story and the little bit I’ve read so far has lived up to my expectations.

Review: THE IMPETUOUS AMAZON by Sandy James

9781426894916_p0_v2_s260x420

About the book:

Book two of Alliance of the Amazons

Megan Feurer is strong and impetuous, like the Fire element she represents. She is an Amazon, sworn to protect humanity from demons, demigods and all manner of supernatural beings who wish ill upon the world. But her fire burns hot and fast, and her unpredictable control of the element brings into question her fitness as an Amazon.

Johann Herrmann chose the life of a Sentinel–a trainer of the four Amazons–to save his sister’s life. Now bound to the patron goddess Rhiannon, he knows his duty demands a solitary existence. But when he’s assigned to evaluate the Fire Amazon, his sacrifice becomes much more difficult.

Megan’s passions ignite a flame that neither she nor Johann can control, and the goddess Freya has reason to fan those flames. A mysterious force is gaining power, and Megan and Johann must join together to fight. And once a passionate fire has started, it’s nearly impossible to stop…

THE IMPETUOUS AMAZON is a hot, sexy, action-packed story from beginning to end. Book Two of the Alliance of Amazons focuses on Fire Amazon – Megan. Sentinel Johann (Joeman) has been sent to Chicago to help her tame her powers and learn to harness her fire. The only problem is the two of them together seem to create even more sparks. I love Megan. She’s brassy, tough and independent on the outside, but if you dig in just a little she really just needs someone to stand beside her and not leave. She needs to be able to depend on someone. She’s able to show Johann her vulnerable side as they come to mean more to each other than just Sentinel and Amazon. While Johann is an important part of the story and the romance between him and Megan is integral to what happens between the Amazon’s and the big bad, there isn’t much to his character. He doesn’t go through much growth and begins the story already in love with Megan. It doesn’t hurt the story at all that his character is stable. In fact, with the huge changes that Megan goes through and all of the action in the story Johann’s stability is a nice balance. I loved every moment of this book and can’t wait for the next in the series (THE BRAZEN AMAZON – MAY 13).

Review: COVERT SEDUCTION by Callie Croix

9781426894923_p0_v2_s260x420About the book:

Navy SEAL Reid Galvin is back from hell and eager to find comfort in Becca Anderson’s arms. He knows he hurt her when he cut contact during his deployment, so when his call interrupts her date with another man, he has only himself to blame. But he can’t forget what she means to him—or the sexy email she sent him—and he won’t miss this chance to claim her as his own.

It’s been weeks since Becca heard from the man she thought she was involved with. So when Reid wants to take up where they left off as if nothing happened, she refuses. Then he rescues her from a first date gone very wrong, and she realizes she’s not quite ready to let him go.

Reid and Becca have a lot to talk about, but since she’s not listening, he’s going to have to regain her trust another way—by bringing her most erotic fantasies to life. Making her surrender to pleasure just might be his most important mission.

COVERT SEDUCTION is an erotic romantic suspense (is that a genre?). There are hot, hot sex scenes between Reid and Becca and lots of action packed scenes as the bad guys come after Becca. I enjoyed the romance between Reid and Becca. It’s sexy and sweet. However, to me the story felt disjointed. It didn’t move smoothly between the suspense and the romance. At times when the couple was being “romantic” there wasn’t a thought to what was happening around them. Becca is run off the road and almost drowns. Reid takes her home and they have some kinky sex. I couldn’t help but think that it would be hard to turn off my brain and stop wondering who wanted me dead like Becca was able to. The suspense part of the story just seemed to happen. There wasn’t a lead up to it or time for the reader to try to figure out what was happening. All of a sudden the reader is told who the bad guy is and it’s over – Becca’s safe. This story just didn’t really work for me.
