REVIEW: STAND-IN STAR by Rachael Johns

About the book:

As an anthropologist, Holly McCartney is more comfortable in a museum than shopping on Rodeo Drive. She isn’t prepared for the media frenzy on her arrival in L.A. to accept a posthumous acting award for her late sister…or for her sister’s gorgeous friend Nate Devlin to come to her rescue. Though he resents her for some reason, she can’t fight their irresistible chemistry—especially when the paparazzi force her to stay at his mansion.

Photographer Nate only agrees to help Holly survive Hollywood for her sister’s sake, but she soon gets under his skin in a way no other woman has. The more time he spends with her, the more his attraction grows and he finds himself opening up to her in ways he never expected. But will ghosts of the past stand in the way of their perfect Hollywood ending?

My first full book read in 2013 and I loved it. There is an emotional depth to the story that I’ve come to expect from Carina Press titles. Holly has to face her sister’s legacy head on and come to terms with their three-year estrangement. She learns that things might not have been exactly the way she always believed they were and has to deal with it being too late to make amends. Nate tells himself that he is only helping Holly because she is Daisy’s little sister and Daisy would have wanted him to help her, but he can’t ignore the attraction between them or the feeling that there is more to Holly than what Daisy told him. I loved how they both make snap judgement about the other and the situations in which they find themselves. Holly and Nate are both guarded characters and it takes a while for them to open up to each other and realize those first impressions were completely wrong. Their happily ever after doesn’t come easy for either of them, but I was rooting for them the whole time.
