Are you a fan of Jill Shalvis? I am and Lucky Harbor is one of my favorite series. ALWAYS ON MY MIND features sexy firefighter, Jack and baker, Leah. Jack and Leah are that pair of friends that you know belong together, but just can’t quite get there on their own. With the help of Lucky Harbor’s “helpful” citizens they might have a chance at taking what starts as a pretend romance into the real thing. ALWAYS ON MY MIND is funny, romantic, sexy, and sweet – everything a reader has come to love and expect from a Jill Shalvis romance.

About the book:

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING
After dropping out of pastry school and messing up her big break on a reality cooking show, Leah Sullivan needs to accomplish something in her life. But when she returns home to Lucky Harbor, she finds herself distracted by her best friend, Jack Harper. In an effort to cheer up Jack’s ailing mother, Dee, Leah tells a little fib – that she and Jack are more than just friends. Soon pretending to be hot-and-heavy with this hunky firefighter feels too real to handle . . .

No-strings attachments suit Jack just fine – perfect for keeping the risk of heartbreak away. But as Jack and Leah break every one of their “just friends” rules, he longs to turn their pretend relationship into something permanent. Do best friends know too much about each other to risk falling in love? Or will Jack and Leah discover something new about each other in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

Excerpt from ALWAYS ON MY MIND:

He stared at her. “That’s quite a list of shortcomings,” he eventually said. “Is that all?”

“No.” She shoved her wet hair from her face, though she managed to keep her regal stance, nose firmly in the air at nose-bleed height. “I held back because I didn’t want to be overly rude.”

He laughed softly. “Don’t hold back, Leah. Let’s hear all of it.”

“Well, your truck has more sporting goods than a store, you never say you’re sorry, and your girlfriends look like supermodels. I mean, what is that? There’s nothing wrong with real boobs, you know!”

“I fail to see the problem.”

She snorted again, and he was starting to feel greatly insulted. “You’re not exactly a walk in the park, Leah.”

“No?”

“No. You’re flighty, you live for your every whim, you downplay any real emotion you feel.”

She hugged herself tight. “Good thing this is all pretend then, isn’t it,” she said softly.

“Yeah.”

She was freezing. And hauntingly gorgeous, so damn gorgeous standing there wet and silvery by the moon’s glow, like a goddess. It’s Leah, he had to keep reminding himself. Leah, who’d once beaten him in a marshmallow-eating contest, only to puke all over him. Leah, whose dark-green eyes had a way of telling the world to bite her. Leah, who’d run off on him and left him heartbroken. He took a step into her—for what exactly, he had no idea—and she poked a finger into his chest.

“God,” she said. “You’re so…” Words apparently failed her, but she let out a sound that managed to perfectly convey how annoying he was.

“Ditto,” he said, and then grabbed the finger drilling a hole between his pecs and tugged her hard enough that she lost her balance and fell against him.

He wrapped an arm around her waist, entangling a hand in her wet hair.

She went still as stone and stared into his eyes. And then lowered her gaze to his mouth.

Yeah, they were in sync there. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. Hers caught audibly in her throat, a good sign, he decided. Maybe she wouldn’t knee him in the balls. Testing the waters, he grazed her jawline with his teeth.

She shivered.

Then he slid his mouth to the very corner of hers and was rewarded by the clutch of her hands on his shirt. Having her hold on to him like this, like he was her only anchor, sent a bolt of lust straight through him. “Leah,” he murmured, hearing the surprise in his own voice, feeling the heat course through him as he finally—God, finally—covered her mouth with his.

Her lips parted for him eagerly, and he groaned, drowning in the erotic collision of her hot tongue and chilled, wet body.

Serious trouble. He was in serious trouble.

Review and Excerpt: Undeniable by Shannon Richard

UNDENIABLE_Richard

About the book:

Grace King knows two things for certain: she loves working at her grandmother’s café and she loves the hunky town sheriff. She always has. As she bakes him sweet treats, Grace fantasizes about helping him work up an appetite all night long. But whenever she thinks she’s finally getting somewhere, he whips out some excuse to escape. Growing up, he never looked twice at her. Now Grace won’t rest until she has Jax’s undivided attention.

Jaxson Anderson can’t deny that his best friend’s kid sister is the sexiest woman in Mirabelle, Florida. Unwilling to burden Grace with his painful past, Jax keeps the sassy blonde at arm’s length. Yet one heated kiss crumbles all of his carefully built defenses. But when a town secret surfaces, threatening to destroy everything they have believed in, can the man who defended Grace from bullies as a child protect her now?

Excerpt from UNDENIABLE:

It was then Jax did the most impulsive thing he’d ever done in his life. He knew exactly where the impulse came from; he’d had the desire for years. He just wasn’t sure how the overwhelming need overran all of his sense. He grabbed Grace before he even realized what he was doing. He gripped her elbows and brought her body flush up against his. His mouth came down hard on hers. She inhaled, startled, and Jax took full advantage of the tiny opening of her mouth, dipping his tongue in and finding hers.

Holy shit.

Never in his life had Jax kissed a girl and felt like his whole body was on fire, burning from the inside out. This was incredible, like nothing he’d ever known. She was warm, and sweet, and soft. How could the inside of someone’s mouth feel this way? Taste this good?

Grace sighed in pleasure as her body relaxed against his. Her arms wound around his neck. He wrapped his hands around her waist as he walked her backward. When her back hit the counter he put his hands on her bottom and pulled her up to sit on top of it, their mouths never breaking.

Holy shit, his hands were on Grace’s ass. Her perfect, incredible ass.

Her shoes hit the floor a second before she pulled her legs around him, her bare feet running up the back of his thighs. Her hands were on his chest, as one of his pulled out the tie in her hair so that he could run his fingers through it. She grabbed on to his side, and her hands slid around and lowered until they were on his butt. She squeezed and he thought he was going to go off, right then and there.

He pulled away from her mouth, letting his lips travel down the slope of her neck. How many times had he fantasized about this? About feeling her soft skin underneath his lips? God he loved her neck, the soft delicate space at the hollow of her throat.

“Jax.” She said his name with so much need that he abandoned his exploration of her neck.

He palmed the back of her head in one of his hands as he slanted his mouth over hers. Grace moaned when their tongues found each other again. The sound of it rumbled in Jax’s chest and settled low in his abdomen.

Jax wasn’t sure how long they stayed like that, wrapped around each other in more ways than one, before a crackling noise filled the kitchen. Mary Landers’s voice squawked through the speaker attached to Jax’s shirt.

“Seventeen, what’s your location?”

Jax pulled back from Grace, both of them breathing hard. Grace’s hair was everywhere, courtesy of his hands. She opened her eyes slowly, as if she was delaying coming back to reality, but Jax slammed into it hard.

What the hell had he just done?

My Review:

I loved the emotion in this story. Grace and Jaxon have both been in love with each other for a very long time, but Jax doesn’t believe that he is good enough for Grace. Jax’s childhood plays a major role in how he sees himself and it is up to Grace (and their friends) to make him realize that he is so much more than his upbringing. Grace also has things in her childhood that are upsetting, but she knows that she is loved and that deserves to be happy and with the man that she loves. Grace and Jax have a very bumpy road to their happily ever after – mostly because of Jax, but sometimes because of other people – but they do get there eventually. This romance wouldn’t be half as good without the wonderful secondary characters. Ms. Richard’s writes each character in just the right way to compliment the main couple and be three-dimensional enough to hold their own if/when they get their own story.  UNDENIABLE is a sexy, emotional, and very romantic story and I can’t wait for the next Country Roads book.

Review: Summer is for Lovers by Jennifer McQuiston

9780062231314_p0_v41_s260x420

About the book:

His heart is unavailable. Luckily, her interest lies in the rest of him . . .

Though she was just a girl when they first met, Caroline Tolbertson’s infatuation with David Cameron remains undimmed. Now fate has brought the handsome Scotsman back to Brighton for what promises to be an unforgettable summer. Soon, Caroline will have to choose a husband, but for now she is free to indulge her curiosity in things of a passionate nature.

That is, if David will agree to teach her.

Past mistakes have convinced David he’ll make a terrible husband, though he’ll gladly help the unconventional Caroline find a suitor. Unfortunately, she has something more scandalous in mind. As the contenders for her hand begin to line up, her future seems assured . . . provided David can do the honorable thing and let them have her.

When a spirited young woman is determined to break Society’s rules, all a gentleman can do is lend a hand . . . or more.

It took me awhile to get into this story. Caroline is so unlike any other historical heroine and I just couldn’t form a connection to her in the beginning. She is so unsure about herself and doesn’t believe in her worth, that it was hard to believe that David really found her to be as interesting as he did. However, as the story goes on and she begins to see that things aren’t what she thought they were she really grows into her own and becomes the woman who David saw all along. That was when she becomes interesting to me and when the story really began to take off. David was a slow starter for me too, but it was  for a different reason. I liked him from the beginning, but I felt that his back story was revealed too slowly. I wanted to know more about him and the details just weren’t there till the end. I wanted to know what had happened to make him act the way he did when he first met Caroline when she was a child and why he tried so had to hold himself away from someone he obviously had intense feelings for. Even with the slow start and build up, I loved the end of this book. I loved the happily ever after and how each character was finally their true selves.

I’m reading SUMMER IS FOR LOVERS by Jennifer McQuiston. I loved her first book WHAT HAPPENS IN SCOTLAND, but I’m having a hard time getting into this one. I’m hoping that it’s just a slow starter and that it will pick up quickly.

Review: Never Desire a Duke by Lily Dalton

About the book:

A Marriage Beyond Hope

Lady Sophia has long been estranged from her husband, Vane Barwick, the Duke of Claxton, whose rumored list of amorous conquests includes almost every beautiful woman of the ton. Yet a shocking encounter with him in a crowded ballroom-and a single touch-are all it takes to reawaken her furious passion for him. But how can she trust the man who crushed her dreams and took away the one thing she wanted most?

A Love Beyond Reason

Claxton has never forgiven himself for the youthful mistake that ruined his marriage to Sophia. Now, after nearly a year abroad, the reformed rogue vows to win back the only woman he’s ever truly loved. He’ll do whatever it takes to prove he can be the honorable husband she deserves-and the passionate lover she desires. As the snowdrifts deepen outside their ancestral home, can they rekindle the flame that burned so bright and find a new path to forever?

NEVER DESIRE A DUKE by Lily Dalton is an emotional, romantic and wonderful historical romance about Christmas miracles and working toward a happily after ever after a tumultuous past. Sophia and Claxton were once very happy together, but after losing their unborn child they drifted apart and Sophia doesn’t believe that their marriage can be saved. However, there is one thing that she wants from him before they go their separate ways…a child. Claxton regrets leaving Sophia alone after the death of their baby and wants to be with her more than anything, but his past has caught up with him and he doesn’t truly believe that he is worthy of her. I loved these two together when they are fighting with each other and when they are getting along. There is a lot for Sophia and Claxton to work through before they can get back together and several things happen to get in their way. I loved the emotion in the story – there is so much love between Sophie and Claxton, but they just can’t seem to get passed the hurt. There is a perfect set-up for more books featuring secondary characters and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

Review: Her Favorite Rival by Sarah Mayberry

9780373718726_p0_v3_s260x420 About the book:

A new meaning for office politics

Audrey Mathews has worked hard to get here. Now she’s up for a promotion and nothing will stand in her way—including Zach Black. He’s hot, smart and the competition. When they’re assigned to the same project, she’s shocked at how much she actually likes about him…and how much she misjudged him.

Before long Audrey is seriously falling for Zach—and indulging in an affair that’s against company policy. And the stakes rise when it’s clear only one of them can get ahead. So where do they draw the line between competition and love? Especially when she doesn’t want to lose either the promotion or the guy….

Sarah Mayberry is one of my favorite Harlequin writers and HER FAVORITE RIVAL just might be my favorite book of hers so far. Audrey and Zach are both so fantastically not what they seem on the surface. Audrey seems to have it all together, but she is hiding a past and family issues that she hasn’t really dealt with. Zach comes across as a trust fund rich kid, but he as far from that as can be. They are rivals at work, but the attraction between them is the real problem. Their relationship develops slowly as they get to really know each other and battle their attraction for each other. HER FAVORITE RIVAL is the perfect read for those who like a little angst and deeper emotional background to their characters.

Review: Geek Girls Don’t Date Dukes by Gina Lamm

9781402277627_p0_v2_s260x420

About the book:

The Royal Treatment

All Leah wanted was a little gallantry. But in this day and age, chivalry was most definitely dead. If only there were a way to travel back in time and snag her very own duke…

Avery Russell was polishing some boots when a woman fell through the bedchamber mirror into his arms. All he could make out from her breathless babbling was some nonsense about “my one true love, Your Grace.” Clearly the chit was mad if she couldn’t tell a valet from a duke!

As much as Avery wanted to give in and give her a good tumble, he knew it wouldn’t be proper. No, he’d take as long as necessary to convince Leah that sometimes a duke just won’t do.

GEEK GIRLS DON’T DATE DUKES is a funny, romantic, emotional story. Leah just wants a man who will treat her right and it wouldn’t hurt if he looked like Colin Firth in Pride & Prejudice. Knowing that her best friend had fallen through a magic mirror and found her soul mate in the past, Leah decides to do the same. The story does take a lot of suspension of reality. The whole “my friend traveled through a mirror and so will I” thing is a little silly, but it fits Leah’s impulsive character. Avery is a wonderful character and different from the usual hero in a historical romance (even a time traveling one). Avery is the valet to the Duke that Leah believes she is meant to be and Avery wants to help her achieve her goal in any way he can. I love his protective instinct toward the crazy woman who falls out of the mirror. He immediately takes her under his protection and watches over her to make sure that she is treated well. When something from his past threatens her he does whatever necessary to keep her safe even if it means risking his own safety. Leah is so sure that she will fall in love with the duke on the other side of the mirror that she ignores her feelings for Avery until it is almost too late. I love Leah’s fish-out-of-water feelings toward being a servant in the past, Avery’s feelings for the girl from the future, and their time traveling happily ever after.

Whatcha Reading Wednesday

I’m going out-of-town for the next few days with my Mom so I’m in panic mode trying to get everything organized for my husband and the kids. It’s amazing just how much I do without really thinking about it to get them to school and their various activities. When it comes to writing it down the list is very long. In between packing and list-making for my husband I’ve been reading NEVER DESIRE A DUKE by Lily Dalton. I’m loving Sophia and Vane so far and hope to get some reading in during my trip.
