Whatcha Reading Wednesday and Unstoppable Winner

First, the UNSTOPPABLE contest winner. I’m sorry that this is so late. We had a winter storm and the kids were out of school for several days. We spent the days playing in the snow, building a gingerbread house, baking, watching movies, and enjoying the time together. I will admit that I was sad when they had to go back to school this morning. Only 7 more days until winter break!!!

The winner of the three Country Roads ebooks is…

Emily B

Please email me at carrie@thebookgirl.net with your preferred retailer (Amazon or Barnes & Noble) and your email address.

Now, for what I’m reading. I’m definitely on a Christmas romance kick. I just finished the new Carina Press holiday books and I’m now reading THE BILLIONAIRE’S CHRISTMAS BABY by Victoria James.

What are you reading this week?

About the book:

Some things you don’t dare let go . . .

Melanie O’Bryan knows life is too short to be afraid of taking chances. And former Air Force sergeant Bennett Hart is certainly worth taking a chance on. He’s agreed to help her students with a school project, but she’s hoping the handsome handyman will offer her a whole lot more. Yet despite his heated glances and teasing touches, Mel senses there’s something holding him back . . .

Bennett Hart is grateful to be alive and back home in Mirabelle, Florida. Peaceful and uncomplicated-that’s all he’s looking for. Until a spunky, sexy-as-hell teacher turns his life upside down. After one smoldering kiss, Bennett feels like he’s falling without a parachute. But with memories of his past threatening to resurface, he’ll have to decide whether to keep playing it safe, or take the biggest risk of all.

I loved the romance between Mel and Bennett. It was obvious at the end of Grace and Jax’s book that something was brewing between these two and I was so excited to finally read their story. Mel is a very happy character and has a very positive outlook on life. She has great friends, a good relationship with her family, a wonderful job, but she is missing one thing – The perfect man. Bennett Hart isn’t as happy and settled as Mel, but he is still a fantastic character. After surviving a helicopter accident in the Middle East he returned to Mirabelle to be near his family and to start work building custom furniture by hand. He isn’t looking for a relationship and the thought of being in anything serious sends him running. Bennett grows and learns what he really wants for life throughout his relationship with Mel. I absolutely adored these two together.Their relationship isn’t a walk in the park they have a few bumps (some small and one big one) along the way, but they are most definitely meant to be together. This is the third book in the series, but can be read as a stand alone. (Although you should read them all because they are fantastic!)

About the book:

Mia Appleby finally has the life she always wanted. She’s escaped her trailer trash childhood and built a nice life for herself with a marketing job and a cute, little condo. But no matter how much baggage she’s ditched from her past, she still hasn’t managed to shake her greatest weakness-men. So when her new neighbor turns out to be single and oh-so-sexy, Mia’s worried she’s playing with fire . . .

Kevin McKnight can’t get enough of his gorgeous neighbor, but after one amazing night, she’s already showing him the door. Something tells him this is the way she handles most men. But Kevin is far from your average guy-and he’s ready to prove it to Mia. When a blast from her past shakes up Mia’s life in a major way, will she stick with her self-sufficient solo act . . . or take a chance leaning on Kevin’s strong shoulders?

Excerpt:

The kiss started out sweet, soft, but cranked to intense quickly, a hot, deep, wet connection that reminded her that their bodies knew each other, craved each other like air, and that being this close was inviting the inexplicable maelstrom that occurred every time she let him put his hands on her. She stopped thinking then, just let herself feel, starting with the pure sensation of his solid, hard-muscled body against hers and ending with the heat of his mouth as he deepened the kiss.

He put his hands on her now, in her hair, holding her face, then with a groan glided them down her body, touching everything he could as he trapped her between the hard desk and his tough body. He stroked her breasts, then slid his hands beneath her clothes to warm her flesh with his hands, and the simmer burst into flames.

When he finally pulled back, she was grateful to have the desk behind her holding her up, because he’d just decimated her, burst right through her every single defense with one simple kiss.

Simple? Ha! She’d never been kissed, so thoroughly, so deliberately, so absolutely fully.

He staggered back a step himself, looking surprised and just as shaky. “There,” he said in a voice low and ragged and satisfyingly hoarse. “You’re finally speechless. I like you that way.”

She stared at him, let out a sound of disgust, and pushed past him to the door. “You’re an ass.”

She slammed the door behind her, a gaffe that surely announced in a scream how he affected her, but she couldn’t seem to help it. No more, she told herself. No more. She was Mia Appleby, ad exec, queen of her world, and no one made her crazy. She kept her cool at all times.

I’m hosting some wonderful historical romance authors today and giving away a great prize pack courtesy of Forever! I’m a huge fan of historical romances, they are my comfort read and always what I go to when I’m in a reading slump.

Here is the question that was given to the authors:

What is the best thing about your heroine?

And here are their answers:

Jennifer Haymore – I think it’s that she’s strong, and she’s determined. She doesn’t always make the right decisions, but her strength and determination to see justice served carry her through.

Kate McKinley – Daphne is incredibly loyal, which turns out to be more of a liability than a virtue.

Kristen Callihan – She knows exactly how to deal with men who have no tact? Heh. Actually, it would probably be that she keeps her cool in sticky situations and rarely judges others without all the facts. She also has great style! 🙂

GIVEAWAY:

One lucky person will win a prize pack with the following books:

  • The Rogue’s Proposal by Jennifer Haymore (print)
  • Shadowdance by Kristen Callihan (print)
  • Entwined by Kristen Callihan (e-book)
  • A Duchess in the Dark by Kate McKinley (e-book)
  • Twas the Night Before Mischief by Nina Rowan (e-book)

You can find Jennifer in Southern California trying to talk her husband into yet another trip to England, helping her three children with homework while brainstorming a new five-minute dinner menu, or crouched in a corner of the local bookstore writing her next novel.

Blog Tour Giveaway, Excerpt and Review! Barefoot by the Sea by Roxanne St. Claire

BarefootbytheSea9781455508235_p0_v1_s260x420About the book:

A Barefoot Bay Novel

When you think you know your heart’s desire . . .

Tessa Galloway is a gifted nurturer-her verdant garden at Barefoot Bay’s new resort is living proof. If only the woman who can grow anything could grow what she wants most: a baby. Her friends think the right guy will come along, but Tessa doesn’t want to wait. All she needs is the perfect donor to make her dream come true. Then John Brown is hired at the resort. If anyone could make beautiful babies, it’s this gorgeous, mysterious man. So why does Tessa suddenly find herself wanting so much more?

Can you give up all your dreams for love?

It’s been three long years since John Brown had to leave his old life. Forced into the witness protection program, he’s desperate to be reunited with his toddler twins. When he gets that chance, there’s a catch-he must prove he’s got a steady job and a new wife. Landing a gig as a chef in Barefoot Bay is easy enough. And falling for lovely Tessa is even easier. The hard part? Can he win the heart of a woman who prizes honesty-when the truth may shatter it?

Review:

I have loved this series from the very beginning and patiently waited for Tessa’s story. I loved every word. Tessa has supported her friends and stood on the sidelines while they have fallen in love, had babies, and moved on with their lives. All she wants is a baby, but she doesn’t want to wait for Mr. Right to comes along. Tessa has come across cold sometimes in the previous books, but in BAREFOOT BY THE SEA we really get to see just how hurt she has been in the past and how she is just trying to protect herself. John is wonderful, except for the lies he has to tell. I just wanted him to open up and tell Tessa the truth so much earlier than he does. With her belief in honestly above all else I knew that she would be devastated by his lies even if they were for a legitimate reason. BAREFOOT BY THE SEA is the perfect ending to this series.

Excerpt:

“Prosciutto eggs Benedict?” she asked, finally tearing her gaze from him to Lacey Walker, who’d been interviewing him while he cooked in the kitchen for the last

hour. “That’s not on our menu.”

“It could be. John, this is Tessa Galloway, but…I be- lieve you two have already met.” Lacey could barely hide the amusement in her voice, but Tessa didn’t look too amused.

“Hello again, Tessa.”

“Hi.” She gave him a not-too-friendly smile, brushing some hair off her face that revealed a smudge of dirt on her cheekbone. She crossed her arms as if she didn’t want to be forced to shake his hand. Or maybe she was covering up more dirt on her shirt. Woman needed a shower. And just the thought of that made him need one, too. Ice-cold.

“Um, Tess.” Lacey gave a quick brush to her own cheek to silently tell her friend about the dirt.

“Oh, oh.” Tessa wiped her face, then glanced down self-consciously, giving him a chance to check out her long, tanned legs and clunky work boots. Damn if they weren’t cute as hell on her. “I didn’t know we were interviewing.”

He shrugged. “No big deal.”

An unreadable response crossed her face as she took a step closer, the light of the kitchen hall catching the golden threads woven into her chestnut-colored hair and highlighting the rise of color under her sun-warmed complexion.

“No, it’s not,” she agreed quickly. “Absolutely no big deal.”

Except, by the look on her face, it was a huge fucking deal and no doubt his disappearing act in the bar would cost him the job. Damn it.

“Tessa runs our on-site farmette,” Lacey said quickly, trying to fill the gaping silence between them. “So she’s always involved with what goes on in the kitchen.”

Which meant she could put a freeze on his hire right this minute. Unless he won her over,

which might take some doing, but he needed this job.

Lacey nudged her closer, and he silently thanked this enabler who was on his side.

“So you can consider me a supplier,” Tessa said, her color returning to normal and her voice finally finding some volume. “For the kitchen. And food. And…stuff.”

More nervous than normal, then, which he’d use to his advantage. As she came closer, he dipped his head slightly. “I love working directly with a supplier.”

“Good, that’s good.” Lacey put a hand on her friend’s shoulder and urged her even closer. “That’s why I’ve asked Tessa to be part of this hiring decision.”

“I don’t remember you saying you were a chef,” she said.

“I didn’t,” he admitted. “But I can cook.”

“He’s being modest,” Lacey said. “He can more than cook and you’ll never guess who sent him our way.”

Tessa raised an eyebrow that said she had lots of ideas—the devil, perhaps?—but didn’t answer.

“Charity Grambling,” Lacey said.

“Really?” Tessa seemed surprised, a smile pulling.

“Then maybe you’re a spy or planning to poison our guests.”

He shook his head. “Neither. Is the local shopkeep an enemy of the state?”

“She didn’t want me to build this resort,” Lacey said as they all walked toward the kitchen. “She thought it was competition for her daughter’s motel, the Fourway.”

He snorted. “Hardly. And I say that as a paying guest.”

“You’re at the Fourway?” Tessa asked.

“We’ll have to do something about that,” Lacey said confidently.

He turned in time to catch Tessa give a wide-eyed “What the hell” look to Lacey, who shook her head quickly.

Screw it, he didn’t have time to dick around. If he couldn’t work here, he needed to move on. “Excuse me, ladies,” he said, pausing at the kitchen door. “But if you’re going to kick me to the curb, then let’s not waste anyone’s time.”

“Okay,” Tessa said.

“No way,” Lacey countered.

Review & Giveaway – His For Christmas by Jennifer Haymore

9781455548019_p0_v3_s260x420

About the book:

Sweet, shy Lady Esme has a little-known pastime-penning scandalous stories! But society must never find out or she’ll be ruined! Fortunately, her dear friend, bestselling author Jennifer Haymore, is happy to share Esme’s sensual tale of lost love and second chances . . .

HIS FOR CHRISTMAS

Lady Amelia Witherspoon simply must get home to her beloved family on Christmas Eve. So when a terrible storm threatens to leave her snowbound, she refuses to admit defeat-even if that means sharing a carriage with Evan Cameron, the last man she ever hoped to see . . .

Evan can’t fathom why his oldest friend is as icy to him as the winter wind. All he does know is that Amelia is still the loveliest, most tempting woman he’s ever laid eyes on. Their only option is to take refuge together at a nearby inn, sharing the one remaining room. Evan promises to be a gentleman . . . but it’s a promise neither of them wants him to keep.

(30,000 words)

HIS FOR CHRISTMAS is a hot, romantic novella. The attraction between Amelia and Evan is off the charts and I loved the way they over come their past to find their way to happily ever after. The story moves at a very fast pace and is a very quick read. The story is still very fulfilling and complete. I especially loved the way the romance between Amelia and Evan comes full circle. Even certain important events repeat themselves in slightly different ways. HIS FOR CHRISTMAS is the perfect read for a cold night!

AlwaysonMyMindcover

About the book:

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING
After dropping out of pastry school and messing up her big break on a reality cooking show, Leah Sullivan needs to accomplish something in her life. But when she returns home to Lucky Harbor, she finds herself distracted by her best friend, Jack Harper. In an effort to cheer up Jack’s ailing mother, Dee, Leah tells a little fib – that she and Jack are more than just friends. Soon pretending to be hot-and-heavy with this hunky firefighter feels too real to handle . . .

No-strings attachments suit Jack just fine – perfect for keeping the risk of heartbreak away. But as Jack and Leah break every one of their “just friends” rules, he longs to turn their pretend relationship into something permanent. Do best friends know too much about each other to risk falling in love? Or will Jack and Leah discover something new about each other in a little town called Lucky Harbor?

Excerpt from ALWAYS ON MY MIND:

He stared at her. “That’s quite a list of shortcomings,” he eventually said. “Is that all?”

“No.” She shoved her wet hair from her face, though she managed to keep her regal stance, nose firmly in the air at nose-bleed height. “I held back because I didn’t want to be overly rude.”

He laughed softly. “Don’t hold back, Leah. Let’s hear all of it.”

“Well, your truck has more sporting goods than a store, you never say you’re sorry, and your girlfriends look like supermodels. I mean, what is that? There’s nothing wrong with real boobs, you know!”

“I fail to see the problem.”

She snorted again, and he was starting to feel greatly insulted. “You’re not exactly a walk in the park, Leah.”

“No?”

“No. You’re flighty, you live for your every whim, you downplay any real emotion you feel.”

She hugged herself tight. “Good thing this is all pretend then, isn’t it,” she said softly.

“Yeah.”

She was freezing. And hauntingly gorgeous, so damn gorgeous standing there wet and silvery by the moon’s glow, like a goddess. It’s Leah, he had to keep reminding himself. Leah, who’d once beaten him in a marshmallow-eating contest, only to puke all over him. Leah, whose dark-green eyes had a way of telling the world to bite her. Leah, who’d run off on him and left him heartbroken. He took a step into her—for what exactly, he had no idea—and she poked a finger into his chest.

“God,” she said. “You’re so…” Words apparently failed her, but she let out a sound that managed to perfectly convey how annoying he was.

“Ditto,” he said, and then grabbed the finger drilling a hole between his pecs and tugged her hard enough that she lost her balance and fell against him.

He wrapped an arm around her waist, entangling a hand in her wet hair.

She went still as stone and stared into his eyes. And then lowered her gaze to his mouth.

Yeah, they were in sync there. Suddenly he couldn’t breathe. Hers caught audibly in her throat, a good sign, he decided. Maybe she wouldn’t knee him in the balls. Testing the waters, he grazed her jawline with his teeth.

She shivered.

Then he slid his mouth to the very corner of hers and was rewarded by the clutch of her hands on his shirt. Having her hold on to him like this, like he was her only anchor, sent a bolt of lust straight through him. “Leah,” he murmured, hearing the surprise in his own voice, feeling the heat course through him as he finally—God, finally—covered her mouth with his.

Her lips parted for him eagerly, and he groaned, drowning in the erotic collision of her hot tongue and chilled, wet body.

Serious trouble. He was in serious trouble.
