The Book Girl

REVIEW: THE PERFECT PLAY by Jaci Burton

77909730From the back of the book:

FOOTBALL PRO MICK RILEY IS AN ALL-STAR BOTH ON THE FIELD AND IN THE BEDROOM. BUT A SEXY, DETERMINEDLY SINGLE MOM JUST MIGHT BE THE ONE TO THROW HIM OFF HIS GAME…

For years Mick has been taking full advantage of the life available to a pro athlete: fame, fortune, and a different girl in every city. But when he meats and beds confident, beautiful event planner Tara Lincoln, he wants much more than the typical one-night stand. Too bad Tara’s not interested in getting to know football’s most notorious playboy any better.

As the single mother of a teenage son, the last thing Tara needs is the jet-set lifestyle of Mick Riley, even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand was unforgettable. Her life is complicated enough without being thrust into the spotlight as Mick’s latest girl du jour. Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn’t intend to put herself out there again, especially with a heartbreaker like Mick.

But when Mick sets his sights to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind.

I LOVE MICK!! Everything about him is *almost* perfect. I love the way he immediately puts Tara first and really pays attention to her feelings. One of my favorite parts is when he takes her to the movie premiere. It isn’t about his career or having his picture in the magazines, it is about her having fun and getting to do something unique. Mick does take his career seriously and struggles to find a balance between football and love. That’s why I said he was *almost* perfect – he has some struggles, but he wouldn’t be such a fantastic hero if he didn’t. Tara is a great character too. She is down to earth, but because of her childhood and teenage pregnancy, she doesn’t see herself as someone with who Mick would find something real. I thought her struggle to believe in his love and its consistency was very well done. Tara was written as the type of woman who wouldn’t just blindly leap at the chance to be with a man – even if she loved him. Both characters stayed very consistent to who they were. They both change throughout the book, but it is a natural change. Nathan, Tara’s son, adds so much to the relationship between Mick and Tara. Mick immediately knows how important Nathan is to Tara and respects their bond while trying to form his own with Nathan. Everything about this book is wonderful. I loved the romance and the family aspect of the story. Even though this is an erotic romance, I didn’t feel as if any of the sex scenes were over the top or gratuitous. They all fit the story and were incredibly hot! Ms. Burton really scored a touchdown with THE PERFECT PLAY! (Sorry – I couldn’t help the football pun)

REVIEW: STROKE OF MIDNIGHT by Bonnie Edwards

ef50f514-7ccb-42a0-95c8-7e46deaa6632img1001From Netgalley:

An unlikely Cinderella…

When hardworking single mom Jaye Sinns meets younger playboy Alexander Carmichael, the sexual chemistry between them is undeniable. So Jaye gives in to temptation and allows him to whisk her away for her first-ever vacation. Two glorious weeks of no inhibitions, no strings and no responsibilities.

A charming prince of a guy…

Life with Alex is every woman’s fantasy-sizzling sex in the back of a limo, on a private plane, in exotic settings. But it’s not enough to fulfill a woman like Jaye for long. No matter how hot the sex is.

A happy ending?

Alex is soon craving more than Jaye’s body: he wants her love and admiration, too. For the first time in his life, he can’t buy the thing he desires most; and now he must decide if he’s willing to work at being the kind of man that Jaye needs, and give her the happily-ever-after she deserves.

A STROKE OF MIDNIGHT is a sexy, retelling of Cinderella. I really liked the characters and the story, but it takes a complete suspension of reality. No one in their right mind would go off for two weeks with a man they just met and want to jump his bones on the way to the airport. There were a couple of times that I thought to myself “this woman is crazy”, but the writing was compelling enough that I was sucked into the story. I think sometimes the best books are the ones that wouldn’t ever happen in real life – a book that is pure fantasy.

Review: HOLIDAY SEDUCTION by Jaci Burton and Lauren Dane *re-read*

31951623From the back of the book:

UNWRAPPED

Amy Parker’s kind of fantasies wouldn’t cut it in the straight-laced law firm where she’s fought her way to partnership. And she refuses to let a younger man use her to advance in the firm. Justin Garrett might be brilliant, gorgeous and sexy, but he’s firmly implanted in the look-but-don’t-touch realm.

Until a corporate acquisition in Hawaii over Christmas gives Justin the opportunity to show Amy he’s interested in her as a woman, not as a way to advance his career. And he has the ideal plan to help unwrap the perfect Christmas gift for Amy.

TO DO LIST

Since she could pick up a pencil, Belle Taylor has used lists to map out her life. but now, just steps away from her highest career goal, she realizes the life she thought she wanted exacts too high a price.

Exhausted, she heads home for Christmas to make a new to-do list.

She didn’t factor in Rafe Bettencourt, her brother’s best friend, kissing her under the mistletoe! Suddenly, Belle finds herself with a while new set of goals to balance with what she thought she always wanted.

Because Rafe’s plan is to seduce Belle back home where she belongs.

This is another of my annual re-reads. I love both of these stories. They both manage to mix the sweet romance of the holidays with some very hot lovin’. In UNWRAPPED Amy and Justin find out how to let loose in Hawaii. In TO DO LIST two friends find out how much they really mean to each other. Both are perfect reads for the holidays if you like your romance on the spicy side!

Review: BELIEVE by Lauren Dane

87103899From Amazon:

Their First Christmas, Bound Together…

All Jude wants for Christmas is Rori, all to himself. It’s their first holiday season as a couple, and staying home, seeing friends and family, means they’ll be surrounded by the memory of Rori’s late husband. It’s time for Jude and Rori to create their own traditions. Time for them to fully explore their most intimate desires to dominate and submit.

Rori is thrilled when Jude whisks her away to a luxury resort in the mountains. Spending Christmas away, just the two of them, is the perfect time to show him she’s ready to give herself to him completely…

BELIEVE is a continuation of the story in SECOND CHANCES. I really think you have to read SECOND CHANCES to love BELIEVE. These two characters go through a lot in SECOND CHANCES. I love Jude and Rori and was so happy when I heard there was going to be another book about them. BELIEVE is about both Jude and Rori coming to terms with their relationship and letting the other know that it is forever. They have no doubts, but are still a little haunted by Zach’s memory. BELIEVE is like a snapshot of what happens after the initial story ends. The couple still has struggles and still has to work to keep their happily ever after. This story is very hot, but for me the emotion between the couple was much more important. I love the connection that Jude and Rori have and was happy to visit this couple again!

Review: UNWRAPPED by Megan Hart

87103887From Amazon:

Naughty is Nice

Newlyweds Leah and Brandon Long are finally taking a honeymoon. But just a few days into their Christmas-in-Vail vacation, Leah takes a tumble on the slopes, severely spraining her ankle. Being stuck indoors isn’t so bad though: the luxurious chalet boasts a hot tub and cozy fireplace. Besides, sitting with her feet up while Brandon serves her in every way a man can serve a woman is exactly how both of them like to spend their time.

Leah would be in heaven, if only Brandon didn’t insist on playing with the dynamic of their relationship. With kinky sex and deep conversation the only things on the agenda, Leah can’t avoid the discussion of how things might change. Will she be ready to take their marriage to the next level in the New Year?

I enjoyed UNWRAPPED, but I think it helped that I had read the books featuring Leah and Brandon. I’m not sure I would have enjoyed it as much if I hadn’t read those. We are thrust into Leah and Brandon’s first Christmas as a married couple. Instead of spending it with his family, they decided to take a vacation together and focus on being together. There is a lot of kinky sex in this book, but it is perfectly countered with emotional moments. Leah and Brandon are each trying to put the other first (even when it is something they don’t enjoy doing) and they learn to blend their desires to find a middle ground.

Review: INSIDE OUT by Lauren Dane

67826910From the back of the book:

WORTH THE WAIT

Ella Tipton is a survivor. In the wake of an attack that nearly left her dead, she has spent each day putting her life back together. Once vibrant and outgoing, she’s needed to reclaim the best parts of who she was while retaining the hard-won lessons. There hasn’t been room for any romantic entanglements, even if she were ready. Still, it doesn’t mean she has to stop sneaking looks at Mister Tall, Dark and Tattooed himself.

Security professional Andrew Copeland isn’t quite sure when his jones for the lovely and decidedly skittish Ella developed. He’s known her for years, has watched her triumph over the pain she’s been dealt. Cope is no stranger to women, but he knows the nervous flush he gets every time he talks to Ella is different from any attraction he’s had in the past. Determined to get Ella to let him in, Cope does the one thing he can think of to get close: he offers her hands-on training in self-defense.

While Ella’s sure Cope is just being nice, the prospect of being able to touch him and gain the tools to push away the last vestiges of her fear is more than she can resist. Soon enough, Cope shows Ella his feelings are far more than friendly, and he reignites something deep inside her. It isn’t long before desire and love turn them both inside out.

I had been waiting for this book for what felt like forever. I tried to wait to read it, but I just couldn’t. I ripped open the package when it was delivered and immediately dived in. Cope is a very complicated character although he doesn’t look it at first glance. I loved how much more we got to know about all of the characters not just Andrew Copeland. (I have to admit I didn’t like when Ella called him Andrew since that’s my sons name. It’s hard to read an erotic romance where the main character has the same name as your 7yo.) Ella has been through so much, but really she is the stronger of the two. She teaches Cope a lot about being himself and letting others see the real him. This series is really about family, both the family you are born with, the family you create, and the friends that are like family. One of my very favorite things about this book was that the characters from both LAID BARE and COMING UNDONE were so important in this book. It really is a continuation from the previous books.

There was one scene in the book that is so fantastically written that I had to write it down and post it to my quote board. In this scene Brody is talking to Cope about love and how scary it can be. Here is the part I love:

“You have to expose yourself, ask someone else for their blood, sweat and tears and give your own. It leaves you laid bare and inside out, Andrew. And that’s what makes it so good. That’s love, man. That’s love and part of what makes it so awesome is the level of real, true intimacy, and the risk you take by opening yourself up that way to someone who has the power to guy you.”

INSIDE OUT is just a fantastic book full of love and family. I absolutely can’t wait for Adrian’s book!

Review: FOUR PLAY by Maya Banks and Shayla Black

678268861

From the back of the book:

“PILLOW TALK” by Maya Banks…Zoe Michaels may be in a committed relationship with her boyfriend, Chase, but there’s no lack of heat between her and her other two roommates, Brody and Tate. after all, the three guys are all firefighters. Then one night, chase reveals his number one fantasy: for Zoe to perform an everything-goes striptease in front of his buddies. A turn-on for them means a turn-on for him. And for Zoe? It proves to be even more, and it opens the door for a secret desire of her own to come true.

“HER FANTASY MEN” by Shayla Black… Kelsy Rena is an enigma. She’s a girlie-girl who’s wild for football, craves action movies, and loves knocking back a cold beer with her three best friends – all male. She’s a puzzle, too, when it comes to sex. These are three hot guys always ready and within reach, but she never seems interested. So who is lucky mystery man satisfying this girl of their secret dreams? The three pals plan to find out. And when they do, they’ll see a side of Kelsey they’ve only dared to fantasize about.

These two stories have two things in common – both are very hot and full of alpha males. ”Pillow Talk” was my favorite of the two stories. I liked that Zoe and Chase were already an established couple. The characters had a connection to each other that was very deep. Chase and Zoe were already in love and the other two were their best friends. There were a few places that I thought went a little too far. The addition of a fifth person was one to many. The way the couple was working to fulfill each others fantasies set the scene for this plot to seem realistic. There was a lot of emotion between all of the members involved in the foursome. (This has nothing to do with this story really, but I loved seeing the characters from one of my favorite Maya Banks books – SEDUCING SIMON)

Shayla Black’s story lacked the emotional that made the Banks’ story great. The three men had nothing in common, other than Kelsey, and they fought a lot. Through most of the story they are trying to top each other and “win” Kelsey. It didn’t feel like love, but lust. Kelsey is wishy-washy and although she says she loves all three men, it seems like more of an excuse to not have to pick one man.

Review: BACKSTAGE PASS by Olivia Cunning

72155947From the back of the book:

FIVE STUNNING GUYS, ONE HOT WOMAN, AND A FEVERISH ROMANCE…

For him, life is all music and no play…

When Brian Sinclair, lead songwriter and guitarist of the hottest metal band on the scene, loses his creative spark, it will take nights of downright sinful passion to release his pent-up genius…

She’s the one to call the tune…

When sexy psychologist Myrna Evans goes on tour with the Sinners, every boy in the band tires to seduce her. But Brian is the only one she wants to get her hands on…

Then the two lovers’ wildly shocking behavior sparks the whole band to new heights of glory…and sin…

This is an erotic romance and there is a lot of sex. I like to read erotic romance, but there wasn’t enough romance in this one for me. It was scene after scene of Myrna and Brian having very inventive sex. I didn’t feel like there was a connection between the two characters beyond the physical. Throughout the entire book Myrna is trying to keep herself separate from Brian. She was hurt in the past and doesn’t want to be in that vulnerable position again. There is a happily ever after, but it comes on very quickly. I was finally starting to see some hope for the characters and it was over. I will read more from this author, but hope that any other erotic romances have more romance.

Review: SECOND CHANCES by Lauren Dane

2e456c71-2033-4e9d-8152-eb46908d021fimg100From Carina Press website:

Ten years ago, Rori Simon left town shy, unattractive and with zero self-esteem. Now she’s back, older, stronger and finally loving herself—and it shows. Hot men are soon knocking at her door, including Jude Callahan, the bad boy who starred in her teenage daydreams…and her adult fantasies.

Jude can’t believe the sexy, confident woman before him is actually Rori! She’s gotten under his skin like no other woman has…and she brings out secret desires he can’t resist. He wants to dominate Rori with every fiber of his being. Wants to own her and pleasure her. To cherish her as he makes her his.

Rori discovers she likes being controlled. She also knows Jude is not a one-woman man. Everything changes when she meets Zach Helm. Edgy, sensual Zach knows just what she needs, and before long, she’s in love. Jude watches them together and wonders if he’s lost his chance forever…

Previously published, newly revised by author

I am a huge Lauren Dane fangirl and I was really excited when this book showed up on NetGalley. I immediately downloaded it to my Kindle and started reading. This is a fantastic erotic romance. The couples in the story are into D/s and Ms. Dane knows how to write that type of relationship well without going overboard. SECOND CHANCES is a very hot book, and has a lot of heart as well as heat.

SECOND CHANCES is full of fantastic characters. Rori is great and “watching” her get a happily ever after was very satisfying, but for me Jude stole the show. In the beginning Jude is a complete jerk, but just because he’s been allowed to get away with it for so long. The women in town allow him to treat them like crap and keep coming back for more. Rori isn’t like those ladies and Jude just messes up over and over. Rori gets tired of his behavior and kicks him to the curb. She meets Zach, the younger brother of a high school friend, and they hit it off immediately. Jude realizes the error of his ways and grows up while watching Rori and Zach relationship takes off. His growth and their relationship follow the same arc. Zach is interesting, but his character wasn’t as developed as Jude’s and I just couldn’t feel much of a connection to him. If I hadn’t been able to read something redeemable about Jude I probably would have felt differently about Zach.

This story is very emotional and had me in tears in several places. (And there is one part of the story that had me bawling.) That is my favorite thing about a Lauren Dane book – the emotion. I don’t think I’ve read any of her stories without at least tearing up at one part or another. The stories come to life and the reader cares about what happens to the characters – good or bad.

SECOND CHANCES is perfect and helped tide this fan over until INSIDE OUT is released in November!

Review: HANDS ON by Christina Crooks

1671From Samhain website:

Talented, down-on-her-luck puppeteer Ginnie Anderson’s life seems destined to fall down around her ears. Much like the rented bungalow that’s just collapsed in a heavy rainstorm, endangering her precious collection of marionettes.

Her livelihood in need of protection and repair, she can’t refuse her landlord’s offer of temporary shelter in his magnificent home. Under his roof, though, she finds her hard-won grasp on her independence slipping—and herself falling into his arms.

The hallmark of Harry Barrett’s business success: he never makes the same mistake twice, particularly when it comes to manipulative women. So why is Ginnie, who pulls strings for a living, like a siren’s song in his blood? It’s best to put temptation as far out of reach as possible.

Yet when Ginnie’s past threatens to destroy the life she’s built for herself, Harry must decide which is more important. Holding tight to his sense of self preservation, or letting go to capture Ginnie’s fragile heart—before it breaks into a thousand pieces.

This book just didn’t do it for me. The whole time I was irritated at Ginnie for allowing Harry to treat her badly and mad at Harry that he couldn’t just man up.

Due to a bad past relationship Harry doesn’t want to be involved with anyone. Even knowing how he feels he allows Ginnie to move in with him after her home is damaged in a storm and does romantic things for her all the time then turns around and tells her that he doesn’t want to be in a relationship. A couple of times she even leaves and he goes after her. Ginnie is just as bad for letting him jerk her around this way. I just couldn’t see this couple holding on to their happily ever after.
