in-over-her-headFrom the back of the book:

He Lives Under the Sea

Reel Tritone is the rebellious royal second son of the ruler of a vast undersea kingdom. A Merman born with legs instead of a tail, he’s always been fascinated by humans, especially one young woman he once saw swimming new his family’s reef…

She’s Terrified Of The Ocean

Ever since the day she swam out too far and heard voices in the water, marina owner Erica Peck won’t go swimming for anything – until she’s forced into the water by a shady ex-boyfriend searching for stolen diamonds and is nearly eaten by a shark. Luckily Reel is nearby to save her, and he discovers she’s the woman he’s been searching for…

Before she knows it, Erica is off with Reel on a series of wild underwater adventures to retrieve stolen treasure, battle the mother of all sea monsters, and defy a death edict from the kingdom’s high council. but even if they get out of their madcap mission alive, how will they find a way to stay together when she hates the water and he can’t survive on land?

This is the first book by new author Judi Fennell and it’s fantastic. I have always been a huge fan of The Little Mermaid, so this book was perfect for me. Of course, it is a merman instead of a mermaid. (Which made the story even more fun). Erica is a character that I had to grow to love. At first she seemed very whiny and weak, but as I got to know her I understood why she came across this way and began to root for her! Reel is a hoot! As the second son, “the spare”, he has spent his life disobeying his father at every turn. I liked his silly and fun attitude. These two but heads at first (at least Erica feels that way), but soon come to depend on each other to stay alive. The action is very quick paced and held my attention completely. I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Wild Blue Under, about Reel’s brother Rod.

Judi Fennell will be guest blogging with the book girl on Thursday with a chance to win your own copy of In Over Her Head – make sure to stop by!

nice-girls-dont-have-fangsFrom the back of the book:

Maybe it was the Shenanigans gift certificate that put her over the edge. When children’s librarian and self-professed nice girl Jane Jameson is fired by her beastly boss and handed $25 in potato skins instead of a severance check, she goes on a bender that’s sure to become Half-Moon Hollow legend. On her way home, she’s mistaken for a deer, shot and left for dead. And thanks to the mysterious stranger she met while chugging neon-colored cocktails, she wakes up with a decidedly unladylike thirst for blood.

Jane is now the latest recipient of a gift basket from the Newly Undead Welcoming Committee, and her life-after-lifestyle is taking some getting used to. Her recently deceased favorite aunt is now her ghostly roommate. She has to fake breathing and daytime hours to avoid coming out of the coffin to her family. She’s forced to forgo her favorite down-home Southern cooking for bags of O negative. He relationship with her sexy, mercurial vampire sire keeps running hot and cold. And if all that wasn’t enough, it looks like someone in Half Moon Hollow is trying to frame her for a series of vampire murders. What’s a nice undead girl to do?

NICE GIRLS DON’T HAVE FANGS is hilarious. Jane is having a really bad day and getting shot while being mistaken for a deer is just the icing on the cake. I loved Jane, she is very funny, brace, and vulnerable. She takes to being turned into a vampire very well (as well as can be expected) and only has one mishap (where she almost bites her best friend). I found the writing wonderful. The book read very quickly and I couldn’t put it down. Molly Harper is a fantastic new writer and I can’t wait to read more!!!

dragonsFrom the back of the book:

The four Caruthers sisters are heiresses with privilege, wealth, beauty, and brains. But these party girls have something extra as well. As the Guardian Keys, possessors of an ancient family secret, they also hold the fate of the world in their hands – between cocktails.

Alex Caruthers knows a thing or two about partying – she owns nightclubs all over the world. But this sassy socialite also knows when it’s time to take off her dancing shoes and kick some serous dragon booty. Finding a balance between running her clubs and keeping the dragons in their own dimension is hard to do, especially since Ginjin – the dragon warrior who’s tried to kill her many times – just chose her to be his mate.

But Alex isn’t about to marry a dragon, no matter how smokin’ he looks without a shirt. Instead she asks Jake – head of the Caruthers’ security team and a total hottie in a suit – to pose as her boyfriend. Their relationship might be fake, but Alex can’t deny that one touch from Jake makes her burn hotter than any dragon could. Now she just has to convince him to turn their pretend relationship into reality, and save the world from the big bad, one dragon at a time…

DRAGONS PREFER BLONDES is the second book in the Caruthers’ sisters novels. This book is about Alex, the sister in charge of the dragons. She is one tough lady who doesn’t like the scaly dragons and especially doesn’t like Ginjin, the leader of the dragons. She is shocked and repulsed when Ginjin asks her to be his mate so that he doesn’t have to mate with the dragon picked out for him. To avoid this she asks Jake, the head of Caruthers’ security to be her pretend boyfriend. Next, her ditsy friend decides to “allow” Alex to plan her wedding in a month. There is more evil trying to take over the world and Alex just doesn’t have time for everything. Jake is an extremely well written character. His feelings for Alex are very evident, but also not something he is happy about dealing with. These two coming together was inevitable, but they have obstacles to overcome. Candace Havens writes with such a witty tone that even the emotional scenes have a fun element. I found myself laughing aloud several times and at other times I was holding my breath hoping that Alex would be okay. I loved DRAGONS PREFER BLONDES and can’t wait for the next Caruthers sister’s novel.

demonFrom the back of the book:

The four Caruthers sisters are heiresses with privilege, wealth, beauty, and brains. But these party girls have something extra as well. As the Guardian Keys, possessors of an ancient family secret, they also hold the fate of the world in their hands – between cocktails.

Gallery owner Gillian Caruthers is a sensation in the art world – in this world, that is. In her other world she’s called the Assassin, a real knockout with an affinity for snuffing out dimension – jumpers who foul up her personal space. She never expected to join forces with one. But when a plague of murderous demons plunges the earth into darkness, she has no choice but to get a little help from a being who knows his stuff.

Arath, the demon king, isn’t quite the scaly thing she expected. In fact, he’s kind of hot – and a bit of an enigma, if his strange past is any indication. In solving that riddle, as well as finding the cause for the sudden influx of mystical creatures on Earth, Gillian may just have to work more closely with Arath than she’d anticipated. And somewhere between the light and the darkness they might discover they have more in common than they imagined…

Candace Havens writes fast moving, action packed paranormal romance. I loved how quickly the story begins. Gilly is in charge of the demons that jump to Earth, she must send them back or kill them. To the rest of the world she is a party girl and a force to be reckoned with in the art world. One of the things I liked was the balance Gilly has to work on between her job and her guardian duties. Arath is a very interesting character. As the new King of the demons he is a force to be reckoned with, but Gilly doesn’t let any man – or demon – intimidate her. Candace Havens writes with such imagination that the reader gets sucked right in. Can’t wait for the next installment of the Caruthers sisters.

tasteBack of the book:

Mixing It Up

Today is Elizabeth Stevens’s birthday, and not only is it the one-year anniversary of her husband leaving her, it’s also the day her bakery is required to make a cake—for her ex’s next wedding. If there’s a bitter taste in her mouth, no one can blame her.

But today, Liz is about to receive a gift. Her Grandma Verda isn’t just wacky; she’s a little witchy. An ancient gypsy magic has been passed through her family bloodline for generations, and it’s Liz’s turn to be empowered. Henceforth, everything she bakes will have a dash of delight and a pinch of wishes-can-come-true. From her hunky policeman neighbor, to her gorgeous personal trainer, to her bum of an ex-husband, everyone Liz knows is going to taste her power. Revenge is sweet…and it’s only the first dish to be served.

This was a really cute paranormal romance, very light on the paranormal. Liz is having a really bad year and decides that her birthday is the perfect time to start over. Luckily, her grandmother agrees. I liked the chaos that her magical food created. The relationships that evolve out of these yummy deserts are fun. My favorite part is what she does to her ex-husband (but I’m not going to tell – you’ll have to read it to find out). I can’t wait to read the next book in the series, A Stroke of Magic, in June.

real-vampires-live-largeFrom the back of the book:

You think it’s easy to keep a boyfriend, run a business, and survive for centuries as one of the immortal undead? Just try it sometime, sweetheart…

It was hard enough when a sexy Scottish vamp bit me while I was feeling a bit…bloated, leaving me eternally retaining, if you get my drift. But when a frustrated vampire hunter firebombs my vintage clothing boutique, I’m ready to pitch a fit. Then my long-time, some-time lover takes off in a rage to hunt the hunter and prove himself worthy of me or something manly like that. And now things are really getting out of hand.

The Energy Vampires want me – and not in a good way. They’re paranormal drug dealers, selling thrills to those who’ve lived for ages, been everywhere, and done everything…and they want to suck me dry.

But it’ll take more than a few super-suckers to get the goods out of this girl. And if they want to make things personal, I’m going to make things downright painful…

Book 2 of the Glory St. Clair series. This book is just as good as the first one. Bones has left Glory to search for the vampire hunter. In REAL VAMPIRES LIVE LARGE Glory gets the attention of the energy vampires who want to take advantage of her untapped power. Glory really grows into her own power through this book. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.

real-vampires-have-curvesOn the back of the book:

What – did you think all vamps were pale, thin, and brooding? Don’t I wish.

Me, I just happened to be bloating when a sexy Scotsman sank his teeth into me, so here I am, Glory St. Clair, eternally “full figured.” On the plus side, I can rock a corset like nobody’s business. Oh, and as for Angus Jeremiah Campbell 111, a.k.a Jeremy Blade? We’ve been on and off again for centuries, currently off. After a couple hundred years we sure know how to press each other’s buttons – in good ways and bad.

The whole never-aging thing means that a girl’s gotta keep moving, and I’m headed for Austin and a new business venture: Vintage Vamp’s Emporium. After all, I love cute clothes, and I am an antique. Only problem is, there’s a billionaire technofreak vampire hunter on the loose. Blade’s in total he-vampire mode and wants me to move in with him so he can ” protect” me. but I’m sick of the not-so-little-woman thing. It’s time for this vamp to explore her own powers…

Glory St. Clair is a hoot. She reminds me of MaryJanice Davidson’s Betsy, with a little less attitude and without the addiction to shoes. Blade is a mega-hot alpha male who wants to protect Glory from everything. This is the first book in the series and I was hooked from the very beginning. The vampires in Austen are being hunted by a vampire hunter and Bones wants Glory out of the way so that he can protect her. Glory wants to prove that she can make it on her own. With a cast of secondary characters this book is hilarious and a great beginning to a new series!

Paranormal Romance

wicked

From the back of the book:

Sparks fly when a love charm goes awry and talented witch Stasi Romanov finds herself in a preternatural lawsuit matching wits with devastatingly handsome wizard attorney Trevor Barnes. Then mysterious magic from an unknown enemy threatens to turn the town into a modern day Salem, and Stasi’s witchy friends gather for the fight. They need Trevor’s powerful help. but every witch knows you can’t trust a wizard, and soon Stasi is fighting for her life and her heart.

When I started reading this book, I was a little thrown off by the change in main characters. I had expected this book to be about Jazz still, but was pleasantly surprised to be reading about Stasi and Blair. These two character’s complement each other completely. I love how they took care of each other and anticipated each other’s needs. Trevor and Stasi share a great chemistry. (I love the red hearts that fly about their heads.) The mystical happenings in this book kept me guessing to the very end. Fluff and Puff (my two favorite characters) were around, as was Irma, Jazz, and Nick.

I felt that changing the main character was a great way to continue on the series. Jazz has plenty of witchy friends who can get in as much trouble as Jazz – she shouldn’t be alowed to have all of the fun.

rogue

From Amazon:

Trag and Tychar are brothers sold into slavery when their planet was destroyed. Their race carries a feline gene, giving them sinuous beauty and extraordinary sexual powers. Tychar’s female conquests are legendary, but they never meant much to him, and Trag just laughs at his playboy brother. Living on Darconia, a planet of friendly but unattractive lizards, neither has been with a woman in many years. When the queen hires Kyra Aramis, a human from Earth, to teach piano to her children, Trag and Tychar agree to share the female and set out to win her over…

But suddenly Tychar becomes possessive – Kyra is unlike any woman he’s ever known. But he’s sure he’s ruined any chance of her trusting him with her heart…

I love the Cat Star Chronicles series by Cheryl Brooks. The books are original and keep my interest from the first page. In ROGUE, Kyra is a terran who has never been off-planet. In her own quest to find something more in life she accepts the job of teaching a princess on the planet Darconia to play the piano. During her first day she meets the “tigers” Trag and Tychar. She is instantly taken with one of them, but is still drawn to the other also. The relationship between Tychar and Kyra evolves quickly and is very steamy. I like how the author did give Kyra time to adapt to her new surroundings instead of having her immediately acclimate. The love story between Tychar, Trag, and Kyra is HOT and deeply emotional. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait for OUTCAST (June 2009).

ravenousFrom the back of the book:

One kiss is all it takes to lose your soul…

Holly Carver is a small-time witch who busts ghosts for tuition money, but she ends up wrangling a demon when a haunted house job goes bad. Her Undead business associate, Alessandro Caravelli, suspects the demon is somebody’s not-so-secret weapon. The supernatural community is at war, and Holly’s unpredictable magic holds the key to the doorway to the demon realms. Soon Holly is on everyone’s must-have list, and not in a good way.

Alessandro wants Holly for more than magic. A lover with six centuries of experience, the vampire is walking seduction, but he’s also a predator. Every moment he spends guarding Holly, every second he spends falling under her witch’s spell, he becomes more and more of a threat himself. As Holly’s grandma says, vampires are like a box of chocolates: They seem tempting, but overindulgence can be a killer…

This is the first book in The Dark Forgotten series. I loved it. It is funny, spooky, and sexy at the same time. Holly Carver is a witch who likes to deal in small-m magic and stays away from the big-M magic, which causes her pain. Alessandro Caravelli is, to me, a mix between Eric from the Southern Vampire books and Jean Claude from the Anita Blake books. He is sexy, old-fashioned, and really just wants to be loved as a man and not a vampire. Holly and Alessandro have amazing chemistry, but both know it is smarter to stay apart.

The universe in Ravenous is interesting. The supernaturals have come out and the world acknowledges them, but doesn’t accept them as a whole. They are treated as equals under the law, but the public seems to be waiting for them to make a mistake. The vampires have a queen that oversees a territory, and warriors who do her bidding. In Ravenous, Alessandro is a warrior for Queen Omara.

I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

Ravenous’ publication date is February 3rd.
