Review: The Hot One by Lauren Blakely

About the book:

Ever notice that sometimes a guy will do something really stupid, like let the love of his life slip through his fingers? Yeah. I’m that guy. But the moment I run into the woman I once loved madly, I’ve got one goal and one goal only–a second chance. The plan? Go big or go home.
Fine, at first glance, stripping naked at my ex-girlfriend’s place of work might not seem like the brightest way to win her heart again. But trust me on this count–she always liked me best without any clothes on. And you’ve got to play to your strengths when you’re fighting an uphill battle. As a lawyer, I know how to fight, and I’m prepared to fight hard for her. Because sometimes you need a second chance at first love.

He’s the one who got away . . .
The nerve of Tyler Nichols to reappear like that at my job, showing off his rock-hard body that drove me wild far too many nights. That man with his knowing grin and mischievous eyes is nothing but a cocky jerk to saunter back into my life. Except, what if he’s not . . .? I’ve tried like hell to forget him, but maybe I’m cursed to remember the guy I fell madly in love with eight years ago. Lord knows I’m not over him, so what’s the harm in giving him a week to prove he’s changed in the ways that matter?

After all, how do you resist the hot one . . .?

My thoughts:

I loved this book! It is romantic, funny, and sexy.

Tyler regrets how he treated Delaney in the past. It wasn’t what he really wanted to do, but he broke-up with her in a terrible way. Eight years later, he wants a second chance. I loved Tyler’s determination to get Delaney back, but also to really apologize for the way he treated her. In trying to win her love again, they are both able to really move on from their break-up.

Delaney doesn’t let Tyler in easily. Even when he shows up at her work and literally bares himself. She hasn’t been able to forget him and isn’t sure if she can forgive him.

I loved the way these two reconnect. They don’t immediately jump into bed together. Delaney wants to make sure that he can’t hurt her again and Tyler wants to show that he has grown as an adult.  Of course, when they do make love it is hot, hot, hot!

Review: The House Mate by Kendall Ryan

About the book:

What’s sexier than a bad boy? A bad ass man who’s got his shit together.

Max Alexander is nearing thirty-five. He’s built a successful company, and he’s conquered the professional world, but he’s never been lucky in love. Focusing so much time on his business and raising his daughter, adulting has come at the expense of his personal life.

His social skills are shit, his patience is shot, and at times, his temper runs hot.

The last thing he has time for is the recently single, too gorgeous for her own good young woman he hires to take care of his little girl. She’s a distraction he doesn’t need, and besides, there’s no way she’d be interested. But you know what they say about assumptions?

This is book 3 in the Roommates series, but each book can be read as a complete standalone as they all feature new couples to fall in love with.

What I thought:

When you start a Kendall Ryan book, you know that you are in for a sexy, scorching romance. The House Mate is just that. There is instant chemistry between Max and Addison.

Max has just had his life turned upside down. After living a carefree bachelor life and planning on continuing everything changes with one word – baby. I love how Max doesn’t act like Dylan couldn’t be his daughter. He doesn’t question his ex-girlfriend about what happened for the last year plus. (Although I feel at some point he should have asked Jen about the important stuff.) Max instantly connects to the baby and sets out to protect her and provide for her.

Then comes Addison. Addison is looking for a change after her world blew up. She answers the ad for a nanny, but she isn’t prepared for how hot the baby’s father is. Addison is the perfect nanny. She falls in love with Dylan instantly and puts her first. When Max tries to make a move, Addison knows that it could ruin their relationship and the relationship that she has with Dylan.

I loved that in this romance, Addison is the more level-headed of the two. Max wants to jump in with both feet and jump her. Addison is scared that her life could be thrown into chaos again and wants to make sure the decisions she makes are the right ones.

My only quibble with the book is Max’s attitude toward marriage and love change almost overnight. There is almost no way a man who has lived his entire existence making sure his relationships are only contemporary and superficial would suddenly want to be a married family man. The story would have rung more true if there was at least a little resistance to his life changing so much.

Blog Tour and Giveaway – Barefoot in the Sun by Roxanne St. Claire

BarefootintheSun-BlogTour9781455508259_p0_v1_s260x420

About the book:

A Barefoot Bay Novel

When running is all you’ve ever known . . .

Caught between fight and flight, Zoe Tamarin has always picked flight. Since she was rescued from a nightmare childhood by her great-aunt Pasha, they’ve been on the move, never staying in one place long enough to risk exposing their precarious past. But now that they’ve reached the sun-baked shores of Barefoot Bay, Zoe may have to stay and fight-for her aunt’s life . . . and for a love she ran from years before.

Sometimes the bravest act of all is to stand still.

Oliver Bradbury came to Florida to start over, as both a doctor and a father to his eight-year-old son. He never expected life to hand him a second chance with the woman he lost years ago-but one look at Zoe Tamarin and he knows he’ll do whatever it takes to prove that this time, he can be the man she needs. But when demands of family and friendship threaten to shatter their rekindled passion, Oliver must heal Zoe’s lifelong wounds with more than hot kisses . . . but will that be enough to keep her from flying off with his heart?

BAREFOOT IN THE SUN is the third book in the Barefoot series and I loved every word. Since the first book when Zoe hid from the mystery man while buying condoms with her friends at the Ritz-Carlton, I’ve wanted her story. BAREFOOT IN THE SUN is an incredibly emotional story that had me breaking out the tissues more than once. Zoe’s life has been spent constantly running and she honestly doesn’t believe that she knows how to begin to put down roots. Once upon a time she thought she had found someone to love, but when she revealed her deepest secret he didn’t give her the reaction she wanted and she did what Zoe does best…she ran. Now her past has caught up with her and she has to decide if it is time to stop running or if she will run forever. Oliver is the perfect match for Zoe. He’s serious and calm – she’s spontaneous and constantly moving. Their relationship in the past became serious fast and ended just as quickly, but this time Oliver isn’t going to let Zoe go without a fight. There is the perfect blend of character growth, romance, and friendship found in this story. I loved how hard Oliver fights for Zoe and how hard Zoe fights against her own nature to find her happily ever after. BAREFOOT IN THE SUN is a fantastic contemporary romance that will delight readers.

Review: And Then She Fell by Stephanie Laurens

9780062068644_p0_v2_s260x420

About the book:

The only thing more troublesome than a Cynster man . . .

. . . is a Cynster lady who believes love is not her destiny. Famously known in London society as “The Matchbreaker,” Henrietta Cynster’s uncanny skill lies in preventing ill-fated nuptials—not in falling victim to Cupid’s spell.

But then she disrupts one match too many and feels honor-bound to assist dashing James Glossup in finding a suitable bride for a marriage-of-convenience.

A task infernally complicated by the undeniable, unquenchable attraction that flares between James and Henrietta, who continues to believe she will never fall . . .

I’ve been reading the Cynster series since the beginning and have loved almost all of them. AND THEN SHE FELL may be my favorite. I simply adored both the hero and heroine. Henrietta is on the shelf, but since she is a Cynster it isn’t quite the same as it would be for other ladies. Henrietta is able to do as she pleases and uses her family’s influence to help the other ladies of the ton make sure the men who are courting them are what they seem. She has made the choice to not get married, but at the insistence of her younger sister puts on the infamous necklace that helps the Cynster females find their true hero. Quickly she finds herself falling for James even as she tries to help him find his suitable bride. I love the way that James and Henrietta circle around each other and maneuver to spend more time together. James has to try to find a way to tell her that he wants her instead of some other woman and Henrietta aches to tell him that she wants to be the name at the top of his list of bride candidates. They are given the perfect opportunity to spend the time together when “accidents” start happening with startling regularity around Henrietta and James has to figure out if someone is trying to hurt her before he can tell her how he feels. The story flows perfectly and there are appearances by lots of the heroes and heroines from the previous Cynster books.

12 Days of Christmas Review: MISS MISTLETOE: A SEALED WITH A KISS NOVELLA by Erin Knightley

About the book:

Finn, Viscount Edgerton, has avoided the London scene to focus solely on digging out from under the pile of debt his father left behind. A decent dowry could make things a hell of a lot easier for the estate, but he hasn’t met the right woman. And he never would have expected her to come in the form of “Miss Mistletoe”—the young woman who stole a kiss at a ball in front of the ton and caused a scandal.

On the eve of her cousin’s wedding, Cece McCrea hardly expects to run into the man who inspired her indiscretion five years ago. This time, she resolves to put aside her childish crush and avoid him altogether. Her will is tested, however, when he pursues her….

MISS MISTLETOE is an incredibly sweet and romantic story. I loved the relationship between CeCe and Finn. As a girl she had been head over heels in love with him and acted impulsively – earning her the nickname Miss Mistletoe. Five years later, they both believe that they will want nothing to do with the other when they are forced to be together for her cousin’s wedding. Finn, however, hates that CeCe can so easily ignore him. He is intrigued by the changes in her and wants to get to know her better. I love how the tables turn on him and he becomes the one in pursuit. Every interaction between the two characters sizzles. Even though MISS MISTLETOE is a novella the author manages to encompass a complete courtship and happily ever after. I loved every minute of the story.

If you haven’t read the other books in the Sealed with a Kiss series – MORE THAN A STRANGER and A TASTE FOR SCANDAL – you should. They are fabulous!

Harlequin Mini-Reviews and Giveaway!

Once again it’s time for this month’s Harlequin mini-reviews and giveaway. This month I read lots of good and a few not as good series books. Here we go!

About the book:

Mel Watson’s just a normal girl until a cab ride turns into an invitation to a whole new life. It’s not until she hears her cab driver being addressed as “Your Highness” that she realizes she’s stumbled into a fairy tale.…

Prince Rikardo can’t believe he’s collected the wrong wannabe princess. Mel’s far from the cynical social climber he planned for—the tempting softness in her eyes makes him wary. For Rikardo’s long given up on love: he wants a temporary wife…and proposing to this sweet, ordinary girl feels all too real.

I love tales of mistaken identity. What I really liked about this book was that Rik, after realizing his mistake, wasn’t a jerk to Mel. He didn’t blame her for the mistake to make her feel bad in any way. A lot of times in these Harlequin books the guys are a little too alphahole for their own good and Rik was refreshingly different. Their romance is sweet and I loved their happily ever after.

the book girl gives INVITATION TO THE PRINCE’S PALACE a 5/5

About the book

Ellie Winston is adopting her late friend’s baby… But she hits a husband-sized hump: to adopt Jiao, Ellie has to be married! Where can a commitment-phobic female find a husband in a day? Then cutthroat billionaire Finn McKenna comes to Ellie with a business proposition, only he isn’t prepared for Ellie’s merger-with-a-twist…marriage!

Finn never lets anyone close, even someone as feisty and intriguing as Ellie. But saying “I do,” even when you don’t really, has a way of making even the most stubborn people wake up and realize what they’ve been missing….

This book just didn’t work for me. I didn’t feel any real spark between Finn and Ellie. They are constantly sending each other mixed signals and pushing each other away with one hand while pulling close with the other. Their relationship is non-existent until the ending when it completely changes. The change didn’t feel natural or realistic at all.

the book girl gives ONE DAY TO FIND A HUSBAND a 2/5

About the book:

He was only supposed to tempt Vanessa Reynolds away from her plot to become queen. The pretty, single mother may believe she’s going to marry his father, but Prince Marcus Salvatora will do everything in his power to prevent a royal marriage.

Yet befriending the lovely American and her adorable baby girl has the debonair bachelor awash in confusion. This woman and her child are not schemers. In fact, they could make his life complete. But once she leaves without a wedding ring, the powerful prince knows he’ll be forbidden to ever truly make her his own.

I wasn’t sure at first if I would like this plot at first. I’m not fond of people cheating in any form, but the relationship between Vanessa and the King isn’t a real relationship and they both know it. I didn’t really feel that she was cheating on him, because she had been honest with the way she had felt about him the whole time. I loved how Vanessa and Marcus go from mistrusting each other to falling in love as they got to know each other. I also liked that even after they fall in love Vanessa is willing to give it up in order to not hurt the King or come between him and Marcus. It’s a very romantic story.

the book girl gives PRINCESS IN THE MAKING a 4/5

About the book:

Standing at the altar, Damien is breathless as the woman he loves walks toward him—to marry another man. Knowing bridesmaid Zoe’s watching him makes it harder still. The opposite of the bride, Zoe’s too loud, too vibrant, too…everything!

Zoe can’t resist provoking him—just once, she’d like to see “Mr. Perfect” lose his cool. She can tell there are fireworks smoldering behind those pale blue eyes.

But before the wedding night is over, their unexpected connection will threaten to undermine everything they both believe about themselves and each other….

I love when a couple starts their road to romance fighting and not liking each other. This antagonism usually stems from some sort of unwanted attraction and always adds more spice to the story. In ALWAYS THE BEST MAN Zoe and Damien are complete opposites – he’s a control freak and she’s Miss Spontaneity – so from the very beginning they have butted heads. When his best friend and hers get married they are thrown together and the sparks fly. I really liked this couple. Even though they seem like opposites beneath the surface they are very similar. They are coping with a fear of being left or not being good enough for someone else, but they deal with it in very different ways. ALWAYS THE BEST MAN is a romantic, emotional, and lovely story.

the book girl gives ALWAYS THE BEST MAN a 4/5

About the book:

Isn’t it every girl’s fantasy to have one of NYPD’s finest living next door? I love a man in uniform!

Unless, of course, he’s Daniel Brannigan—older brother of my best friend, with an ego the size of Texas and a reckless streak a mile wide. To say we bring out the worst in each other is an understatement! Especially now that we know each other’s secrets….

So this is one fantasy I’m refusing to indulge in. But did I mention he used to be a marine? Apparently they like a challenge….

This book didn’t work for me until the very end. I like it when there is some fire between the couple and their dislike really stems from attraction, but this couple’s constant arguing and one-upmanship got on my nerves.  I also didn’t feel that either character was really into the relationship until the very end. However, the end was brilliant. I almost stopped reading the book around 75%, but was out and didn’t have anything else uploaded onto my fire so I decided to finish it and I was glad that I did. The ending is full of emotion and shows the true depth to the characters. This is a hard book to rate since I only really enjoyed a very small percentage, but I think that it deserves a solid 3.

the book girl gives NEW YORK’S FINEST REBEL a 3/5

About the book:

His not-so-perfect fiancée…

Emilio Andreoni’s goal is perfection. A corporate king and Italy’s most eligible bachelor, he craves only one more thing to complete his phenomenally successful life—the perfect woman!

Once he thought that woman was shy Gisele Carter, until her scandalous goings-on became headline news and he called off their seemingly perfect engagement.

But now Emilio is faced with proof of Gisele’s innocence. He’s determined to win back the only woman who ever truly satisfied him, but first he must persuade Gisele she’s worthy of wearing his diamonds again.…

This is one of those deliciously angst  filled books that Harlequin is famous for. Emilio turned Gisele away when he thought that she had betrayed him. Two years later he finds out that what he thought was completely wrong that Gisele had been innocent. He sets off to “make it up to her” as if she should immediately just back into his arms and not care that he set her away with no thought to what would happen to her. In the two years, Gisele has grown stronger and become a woman who won’t just follow what Emilio wants and be arm candy to make him look good. Their new relationship is full of sparing and hatred, but even though Gisele doesn’t want to find herself attracted to Emilio anymore she is. She can’t help but want to touch him when he’s near. I liked the chemistry between Gisele and Emilio. Plus the tension as they try to find some way to put their relationship back together again.

the book girl gives DESERVING OF HIS DIAMONDS? a 4/5

About the book:

Sometimes Wrong Feels Oh-So Right

Hillary Wright has always been a magnet for Mr. Wrong. Her latest left her in trouble with the law, and to clear her name, she’s agreed to an undercover sting—as the “date” for infamous Troy Donavan. The notorious hacker is now a government good guy…and a sexy billionaire playboy. Troy has a reputation as the sort of man she’s vowed to avoid, and his secretiveness adds fuel to Hillary’s distrust. But with his kisses like molten sin, her fierce resistance is melting. And being sensible in the face of such overpowering desire is just not an option.

I loved this book. Sexy, sexy alpha Troy walks the like between bad boy and good man. He does what he needs to do to protect those he cares about and if it includes lying or omitting the truth. Hillary isn’t as interesting as Troy, because she lets the men in her life make the decisions for her over and over. However, with Troy there are times that she is able to stand up to him. She doesn’t give in to the attraction between them right away and makes him wait to make love when if he had his way they would have done so the night they met.  The attraction between Hillary and Troy is instant and hot. I loved the way his wanted to protect her, but also use the opportunity to spend more time with her and be able to really get to know her well. Troy was focus on more than just the physical attraction. I can’t wait for the other two books in this series featuring The Alpha Brotherhood!

Review: ECSTASY by Bella Andre

About the book:

In ECSTASY, Candace, a newcomer to writing erotica, is thrilled when Charlie, a veteran of the industry, agrees to be her mentor. But neither of them ever expected that Charlie’s lessons on new positions, using toys, varying locations and role playing would spiral from verbal instruction into hands on education. Unfortunately, Candace’s deception about the new contemporary erotic romance she’s writing–where Charlie plays the starring role–is about to threaten their one chance at true love. (Steamy scenes, explicit language…and lots of emotion.)

This was a quick read and very, very sex driven. I just couldn’t connect with the characters. Charlie, who seems like a great guy, can’t get a woman to pay attention to him in the beginning. Candy is shy and bumbling when they meet and doesn’t know a lot about sex, but wants to be an erotica author. Charlie offers to mentor her and the “shy” Candy decides to strip and they have wild monkey sex at their first mentoring session. The characters didn’t stay true to themselves and switched from one way to another with every scene. This book just didn’t work for me.

Review: TAKE IT LIKE A VAMP by Candace Havens

About the book:

Vampire Nick Christos might have been born in the Middle Ages, but those days seem tame compared to the last eight years spent ruling the Supernatural Council. The only respite in his long days of governing is with his sweet neighbor Casey Meyers. Sure, he’s forced to take a cold shower after every encounter, but no way will he risk anything more with a human. Not with his blood thirsty ex on the prowl and out to ruin Nick’s life.

But when said crazy ex shows up at the ball and flies her freak flag high, Nick has more to worry about than keeping his hands off his neighbor. He’ll have to stay closer than ever if he hopes to keep her alive, but will she want to leave him forever when she learns the truth?

I have always been a huge fan of Candace Havens. I especially love her paranormal romance books. They are written with the right balance of humor and sexiness. TAKE IT LIKE A VAMP is no different. Nick is one sexy vampire dude. He is super rich, super good-looking, and super nice. I liked that there wasn’t anything really wrong with him. He wasn’t terribly broody or angst-ridden. His only flaw is that in trying to protect Casey from things he hides some bits and pieces of his life from her. Casey is also an amazing character. She’s super flawed (in her own mind) and constantly puts herself down (and Nick builds her back up), but unlike most characters that act this way it didn’t get on my nerves. I’m not really sure why it didn’t, but I liked her warts and all. The action between Nick’s ex and Casey is fantastic. The story moves quickly and is hilarious. The sex (when Casey finally gets her way) is explosive. I’m hoping that we get more set in this world created by Ms. Havens. (I really, really want Nick’s best friend Linc’s story!!)

Harlequin Mini-Reviews and Giveaway

I love Harlequin romances! Here are my mini-reviews and a chance for one commenter to win the book of their choice (from the books reviewed) in either print or digital.

About the book:

Ever wonder what happened to the guy most likely to…

Score with the prom queen?
Lauren and Seth were the high school “it” couple—until Seth disappeared on prom night. But a reunion gives Seth a chance to show Lauren an evening long overdue.

Not date a Playboy Bunny?
Ali was the highlight of geeky Will’s high school years. But now that he’s ditched the nerdiness, he’s 100 percent of calculated hotness…and Ali won’t be able to say no.

Ride out of town on a Harley?
Rebel Scott “Rip” Ripley always had a thing for the elusive Erica. But reunion night holds a few sexy surprises when Erica decides it’s time to take the bad boy for a ride.

I really enjoyed this anthology. Each story is about reconnecting with “the one that got away”. The characters are well-defined and the back story between the couples told quickly in the beginning of each story. The book reads very quickly and the stories are sexy and romantic.

the book girl gives THE GUY MOST LIKELY TO… a 4/5

About the book:

The moment he sees Melissa Weber, photographer Jack Shea knows he wants her—as a model. (And maybe a little more.) Stunning, serene and very, very sexy, she’s perfect. But keeping his hands off Melissa is going to be way harder than he thought….

Once Melissa is in front of the camera, she comes to life, channeling a raw passion that the camera—and Jack—find irresistible. But each time she bares her body and soul, the intense sexual current between them grows stronger. And the more they give in to temptation, the more they both risk becoming exposed!

It took me a while to get into this story, but once I did I really enjoyed the characters and romance. Jack is charming and flirtatious, but underneath he is not as confident as he comes across. The women in his life think that he is a player, but he isn’t. He is looking for someone special and really likes every woman that he sleeps with. Melissa is a different kind of heroine. She has hypertension and has spent time practicing yoga and taking classes in order to keep herself calm and busy. When she is around Jack her blood pressure evens out and she feels better than she ever has. The sex scenes are electric and well written.

the book girl gives LIGHT ME UP a 4/5

About the book:

“You are so wrong for me.”

Levi had to agree—he was. He was leaving Chicago in a few short weeks. He didn’t do commitment—ever. But everything about this night, this girl, was so good. So right. Until at 11:59 p.m. she got out of his bed, got dressed and left!

What had he done? Things had hardly started and she was off! Yet he was bored with simpering women he couldn’t get rid of. Elise was a breath of fresh air. How was he going to find her…and get her back in his bed—for the whole night this time? It seemed Mr. Levi-and-Leave-Them might have found the one woman to leave him begging for more.…

My favorite thing about this book is the way Levi and Elise find themselves in a full-blown relationship when all they wanted was a one-night stand. It’s so sweet and romantic the way their relationship evolves. Even though there are some bumps along the way Levi and Elise are perfect for each other. Levi had a bad upbringing and doesn’t think he is capable of a relationship and Elisa has a plan that she doesn’t want to a man to interfere in. These two have to find a way to overcome their fears. The only thing that didn’t work for me was the ending. In the epilogue there are references to characters that haven’t been a part of the story and the way they are written in it seems like the reader should know who they are.

the book girl gives NEVER STAY PAST MIDNIGHT a 4/5

About the book:

The man behind the reputation

Connor Matthews has to be the only surgeon ever to ride his motorbike into the E.R.! And Dr. Kate Graham is determined to disapprove, even if it made a sick little boy’s dream come true. Connor’s love-’em-and-leave-’emreputation is hospital legend, so Kate’s steering well clear. Although, Connor’s sinful sexiness is coming critically close to cracking the shield around Kate’s fragile heart….

Heartbreakers of St. Patrick’s Hospital
The delicious doctors you know you shouldn’t fall for!

This story felt flat to me. The relationship between Connor and Kate happens behind the scenes mainly. We are told that they get close, but don’t see it. When they do finally come together it seems to happen to quickly. Also, Kate is very cold and standoffish, but the reader isn’t told why until the end. The characters would have been more likeable if the reader had been let in on why Kate was the way she was.

About the book:

Spurned and publicly humiliated by the father of her child, Princess Emmeline d’Arcy has no ring, no wedding date and no legitimacy for her unborn baby.

And the last straw? Having to trade in her gilded lifestyle and pretend to be her twin sister, otherwise known as Sheikh Makin Al-Koury’s personal assistant.

Accustomed to being waited on hand and foot, Emmeline finds herself having to jump to the click of her boss’s skillful fingers—day and night! But once the sheikh uncovers her shameful past, will his touch be nothing but a scorching memory?

Princes Emmeline came across spoiled and selfish in her sister’s book (NOT FIT FOR A KING?), but in HIS MAJESTY’S MISTAKE we get to see the real Emmeline. She has spent her whole life being told what is wrong with her and never being praised for the things that she accomplished. Makin has spent his life being loved and nourished and is shocked when he sees the way that Emmeline is treated by her mother.   I love the way that Makin protects and takes care of Emmeline. The romance between the two of them is sweet and lovely. I really enjoyed this story.

About the book:

Veronica and Raj have both had unpleasant pasts that have led them to want very different things. Raj doesn’t believe he will ever have a home or family and Veronica wants nothing more than a family of her own and a man who loves her. These two shouldn’t work together, but they do.
