The Book Girl

Review: VISCOUNT BRECKENRIDGE TO THE RESCUE by Stephanie Laurens

109516620From the back of the book:

You are cordially invited to the wedding of Miss Heather Cynster…but not before she encounters kidnappers, danger, and a daring rescue at the hands of Viscount Breckenridge

Determined to hunt down her very own hero, one who will sweep her off her feet and into wedded bliss, and despairing of finding him in London’s staid ballrooms, Heather Cynster steps out of her safe world and boldly attends a racy soiree.

But her promising hunt is ruined by the supremely interfering Viscount Breckenridge, who whisks her out of scandal – and straight into danger, when a mysterious enemy seizes her, bundles her into a coach, and conveys her out of London.

Now it’s up to the notorious Breckenridge to prove himself the hero she’s been searching for all along…

I LOVED THIS BOOK!! First, the cover is absolutely beautiful. Second, Breckenridge and Heather are fantastic. From the very beginning, when they both believe that they dislike each other, the chemistry between them is off the charts. Heather is such a fun character and no fainting miss. When she is kidnapped, she doesn’t freak out or faint, she tries to find out who wants her and why. Of course, it helps that Breckenridge is with her the whole time keeping his eye on her from a distance. The plot moves at a great pace. There are several funny moments that keep the action light and fun. The “courtship” part of the book is just as great as the kidnapping and “rescue”. Two stubborn people butting heads when all they really want is to be with the other forever. Fantastic!!

I can’t wait to read the next book – IN PURSUIT OF ELIZA CYNSTER – when it comes out next week!!

Review: NEVER ENOUGH by Lauren Dane

1004159961From the back of the book:

ALL THE RIGHT NOTES…

Gillian Forrester spent most of her life running from who and what she came from…until Miles came along. The moment she held the tiny newborn her older sister didn’t want, Gillian stopped running and began to build a life for herself and her adopted son. Now, thirteen years later, as Gillian’s sister lies dying, she reveals the father’s identity nd makes Gillian promise to find him.

Adrian Brown is the epitome of the successful rock star. He’s seen and done it all, with few regrets. It takes a lot to shock him – but the bombshell that he has a thirteen-year-old son rocks his world. And Adrian is een more surprised when the buttoned-up, elegant woman who’s raising Miles snags his erotic and romantic attention.

The last thing Gillian expected was to find herself getting hot and heavy with a person life Adrian. But as much as she wants to open up and give herself fully to this amazing man, she’s afraid the secrets of her past and Adrian’s problems with trusting people may keep them apart for good. If love isn’t enough, can they find the trust they need?

The fourth book in the Brown series is full of emotion, passion, and romance. I enjoyed NEVER ENOUGH, but didn’t love it like I did the previous books. There was something missing for me. I’m not even really sure what it was, but I know that when I finished the book I wasn’t ready to read it again like I was with LAID BARE and INSIDE OUT. NEVER ENOUGH reminds me more of COMING UNDONE – the story is entertaining, the sex hot, and the romance sweet – but no real action. The climax scene between Adrian and Gillian came out of nowhere and the reactions of everyone were over the top. I also didn’t care for the abrupt ending to the book. I would have liked a sweeter ending with Miles, Adrian, and Gillian than the sex scene the book ended on. I don’t think this book will be a re-read like LAID BARE (which I’ve read at least 10 times).

Review: CHERI ON TOP by Susan Donovan

102046972From the back of the book:

SHE’S GOT EVERYTHING SHE WANTS

Sun-drenched beaches, designer-label clothes, drop-dead-gorgeous boy-toys…all paid for with a series of high-risk real estate deals. That’s the life-style Cherise Newberry and her BFF Candy enjoy after leaving rural North Carolina for Tampa – until the market tanks and they lose everything. Cheri is surviving on Ramen Noodles and temp jobs when she gets a call from home to come back and run the family’s small-town newspaper. Just one catch: She’ll become the boss of her high school crush – and former brother-in-law – who might have the power to crush her all over again…

BUT HE’S WHAT SHE NEEDS

But Cheri is surprised to see how “bad boy” J. J. DeCourcy has grown into the hard-working and principled managing editor of The Bigler Bugle. Still, according to Cheri’s bitter sister, he’s not to be trusted. If Cheri’s going to co-exist with this sexier-than-ever man from her past, she needs to stay professional – and keep her distance – even though he sets her on fire. When they’re handed the biggest news story in the town’s history, Cheri must trust J.J, even if it means putting her life in danger…and her heart on the line.

CHERI ON TOP is a contemporary romance that focuses on a small mystery and the rekindled relationship between Cheri and J.J. It was lacking something for me. I enjoyed the mystery, but felt that the relationship wasn’t enough. Cheri and J.J were a couple in high school and broke up when she left for college. Cheri led a happy life in Florida until she lost 14 million dollars in a real-estate deal and now she is back in North Carolina. J.J. married and divorced her sister and then started working for Cheri’s family newspaper. When Cheri comes back J.J is instantly back in love with her and he moves to make her his again. Cheri doesn’t immediately fall back in love with J.J., but she allows him to work his way back into her life without really knowing what happened for the past five years he has been absent in her life. It just didn’t feel realistic to me at all. I want more emotion when it comes to the couples in my romance novels.

The only thing I truly loved about this book was Cheri’s “guard squirrel” and how she protects Cheri during the climatic scene of the book.

Review: A NIGHT TO SURRENDER by Tessa Dare

113765346From the back of the book:

Welcome to Spindle Cove, where the ladies with delicate constitutions come for the sea air, and men in their prime are…nowhere to be found.

Or are they?

Spindle Cove is the destination of choice for certain types of well-bred young ladies: the painfully shy, young wives disenchanted with matrimony, and young girls too enchanted with the wrong men; it is a haven for those who live there.

Victor Bramwell, the new Earl of Rycliff, knows he doesn’t belong here. So far as he can tell, there’s nothing in this place but spinsters…and sheep. But he has no choice, he has orders to gather a militia. It’s a simple mission, made complicated by the spirited, exquisite Susanna Finch – a woman who is determined to save her personal utopia from the invasion of Bram’s makeshift army.

Susanna has no use for aggravation men; Bram has sworn off interfering women. The scene is set for an epic battle…but who can be named the winner when both have so much to lose?

A NIGHT TO SURRENDER is the first in a series by Tessa Dare. I’ve really enjoyed her previous books and enjoyed A NIGHT TO SURRENDER too. There is a lot of humor in the story – from the sheep (I loved the little one named Dinner!) to all of the antics of the women and men in Spindle Cove. There is also a lot of emotion. The purpose of Spindle Cove is to help the women who are shy or unhappy lead a fulfilling life. Susanna was perfectly content in her life until Bram showed up. I loved how her world is turned upside down and she had to find out how to lead this new life. Bram never wanted to be an Earl or to be anywhere except on the battle field. His life has also been turned upside down.  Bram and Susanna both have baggage and they need each other in order to overcome and learn from the past. The dialogue is snappy and the plot moves through at a great pace. I loved every minute from start to finish and can’t wait to be in Spindle Cove again.

Review: IN BED WITH A HIGHLANDER by Maya Banks

121895170From the back of the book:

Bestselling author Maya Bank’s beguiling new trilogy features three unforgettable brothers risking everything to save their clan and their legacy – and to surrender their hearts to love.

Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his – until a blue-eyes, raven-haired temptress is thrust into his life. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.

The illegitimate daughter of the kind, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn – and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. but her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as way draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons – and embrace a love that means more than revenge or land.

The first book in a new series by Maya Banks! I was so excited to start reading and once I started I couldn’t put it down. I have a love/hate relationship with Scottish historical romances. I hate when they are bogged down with brogue heavy dialogue. There isn’t any of that in IN BED WITH A HIGHLANDER. Mairin is a fantastic character – fierce, protective, and loving. She has every reason to shy away from love, but doesn’t. I loved her relationship with Ewan’s son, Crispin, and Ewan’s brothers. She is contrary and doesn’t fall right into the role Ewan wants her too – she is her own woman and isn’t going to let a man (no matter how sexy) control her. Ewan is to die for. He takes care of his clan and isn’t going to let anything happen to someone in his protection. He changes throughout the book from a man that wants revenge above all other things to a man that understands the importance of love. The romance is spectacular. I can’t wait for the other books in the trilogy.

Review: ONCE AND AGAIN by Lauren Dane

1164347231About the book:

This time, he plans to do it with class. Style. And more than a little groveling…

Petal, Georgia, Book 1

Seven years ago, Lily Travis was only too glad to see her hometown of Petal, Georgia, in her rearview mirror. Thanks to her father running off with a twenty-year-old, though, here she is, trying to pick up the pieces. First order of business: meet with her brother’s teacher in a quest to pull his grades out of a downward spiral.

Nathan Murphy is pretty much resigned to his bachelor status—until he looks up from his desk to see an all-grown-up Lily walking into his classroom. Of all the women who turned out to be totally wrong for him, she’s the only one who felt right. At least until his foolish, immature mistake drove her away.

Lily has to admit that time has been more than kind to gorgeous, sexy Nathan. Except there’s no room on her full plate for another complication. Especially with a man who broke her heart once before.

With a little help from his friends, Nathan has a plan to rekindle the flame. It isn’t long before they’re burning up the sheets. Winning her heart? That’s another matter.

Warning: Hot, sexy high school teacher in denim and boots. Strong-willed females abound. Bad words and naughtiness, too. Come on, you know you want to read it.

I am a huge fan of Lauren Dane and loved the Chase brothers books that take place in Petal. I was really looking forward to reading ONCE AND AGAIN. I wasn’t disappointed. I loved everything about this book. Two of my favorite things were the glimpse into the lives of the Chase’s (you don’t have to have read the previous books to enjoy this one – it is separate from that series)and the scenes with Polly Chase.

Nathan and Lily were once in love but were too young and immature to realize exactly what they had with each other. ONCE AND AGAIN is a story of rekindling a lost love and getting a second chance. As with Ms. Dane’s other books, family plays a very important role in ONCE AND AGAIN. Lily is trying to keep her family together – her father has abandoned the family for a younger woman, her mother is depressed, and her little brother is about to flunk out of the 10th grade. Lily returns to Petal to try and keep things together. Nathan is very close to his family and he uses this to his advantage when he sets out to woo Lily. I laughed at his brothers and sisters alerting him to where Lily was in town. I loved the emotion between Lily and Nathan, but also between them and their families. Nathan hurt Lily badly once upon a time and I really liked that Lily doesn’t just cave when confronted with Nathan’s sexy flirting. She makes him work to get her back. The ending felt a little abrupt and I would have liked a little more. Hopefully we will get to see what happens next with Nathan and Lily in the next Petal book.

ONCE AND AGAIN is a sexy and moving romance. I can’t wait to find out what happens next in Petal.

Review: IT’S ALWAYS BEEN YOU by Victoria Dahl

974692501From the back of the book:

ONCE SHE SLIPPED THROUGH HIS FINGERS…

Aidan York has spent ten years mourning the woman he once loved and lost. He’s filled the void in the only way he knows – by distracting himself with wild behavior and scandalous trysts. It’s a hollow existence, but it dulls the pain. Until the day he encounters a ghost: the woman he thought drowned at sea, alive, and as enchanting as ever…

NOW HE’LL KEEP HER IN HIS ARMS…

When Kate Hamilton sees the man she once hoped to spend her life with, she is hit with a storm of memories and longing. But though resisting Aidan’s passion proves impossible, Kate must try not to love him all over again. For her seemingly quiet London life shields a dangerous secret, one that will catch up to her the moment she lets herself fall…

I’m a huge fan of Victoria Dahl (although I enjoy her contemporaries more than the historical romances), so I was excited to read IT’S ALWAYS BEEN YOU. I enjoyed the book, but didn’t love it as I did the previous book in the series – A LITTLE BIT WILD. I think my problem was Kate. I didn’t understand some of her actions and wondered the reasoning behind things she did. I was frustrated that she wasn’t telling Aidan the truth about her past and present. I adored Aidan and loved his story. The pain he felt after losing Kate and his reactions to the loss endeared him to me (even though he was acting like a man-whore). The chemistry between Aidan and Kate is electric and I enjoyed them as a couple. IT’S ALWAYS BEEN YOU is an romantic read and any fan of the “second chance romance” will enjoy this book.

Review: ROMANCING LADY CECILY by Ashley March *ebook*

119221317About the book:

Follow acclaimed author Ashley March, praised by Booklist for her “elegant writing [and] sizzling sexual chemistry,” into the world of Victorian romance, where Lady Cecily Bishop—promised by her parents to a stranger—must fend off the seductive games and heady caresses of Baron Sedgwick….a task that becomes more difficult with each soul-searing kiss…

ROMANCING LADY CECILY is a short novella that shows a brief glimpse into some of the characters from Ashley March’s other books. I enjoyed reading this novella since I’m a fan of Ashley March’s writing. It is spicier than her full length novels (which I loved) and moves at a dramatic speed. Lady Cecily is betrothed to a mystery man, but she can’t keep her mind off of Baron Sedgwick. The chemistry between the two is off the charts. I loved how the Baron comforts Cecily when she learns of her friends death. I can’t wait to read ROMANCING THE COUNTESS to find out what exactly happened to Cecily’s best friend. If you are a fan of quick but satisfying reads this is a good book to pick up. (And it’s only $2.99!)

Review: DRAGON BOUND by Thea Harrison

97597077From the back of the book:

Half human and half Wyr, Pia Giovanni spent her life keeping a low profile among the Wyrkind and avoiding the continuing conflict between them and their Dark Fae enemies. but after being blackmailed into stealing a coin from the hoard of a dragon, Pia finds herself targeted by one of the most powerful – and passionate – of the Elder Races.

As the most feared and respected of the Wyrkind, Dragos Cuelebre cannot believe someone had the audacity to steal from him, much less succeed. And when he catches the thief, Dragos spares her life, claiming her as his own to further explore the desire they’ve ignited in each other.

Pia knows she must repay Dragos for her trespass, but refuses to becomes his slave – although she cannot deny wanting him, body and soul…

OMGosh! DRAGON BOUND may be one of my favorite books this year. Dragos is sexy and Pia is fantastic. I loved the banter between the characters. I laughed several times at Dragos. He is very old and disconnected from some parts of society. There are times that he just didn’t get what Pia was saying. The relationship between Pia and Dragos is very sexy and romantic. I enjoyed her spunk and how she didn’t just bow down before Dragos. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!

Review: MAD ABOUT THE DUKE by Elizabeth Boyle

75698562About the book:

madness \’mad-nes\ n (14c): the quality or state of being mad:

a: rage b: insanity c: extreme folly d: ecstasy, enthusiasm.

And, added in the margins of the dictionary owned by James Tremont, the 9th Duke of Parkerton, one additional definition:

e: the state of finding oneself mistaken for a solicitor by a duke-hunting beauty who needs to be enthusiastically taught the true meaning of love.

Rage, insanity, extreme folly, and ecstasy will most likely be involved.

MAD ABOUT THE DUKE was a very fun book. I loved the connection between Elinor and Parkerton. The whole plot centers around Elinor’s search for a Duke and Parkerton’s mistaken identity.  I love how Elinor falls in love with the man she believes to be a solicitor. She is willing to give up her dreams of marrying a wealthy duke for love. I also really enjoyed how this book has characters popping up from lots of past Elizabeth Boyle books – especially Mad Jack! (He’s one of my favorites.) The romance is sweeping and the characters fantastic. A perfect historical romance!
